Ok, my rear bumper is rusted to hell. Well, not to hell, but there are areas that, after sanding, are more black, bare metal than chrome. It's pretty bumpy and stuff from all the surface rust. All in all, the thing looks like crap, but it isn't "structural" rust at all, just cosmetic/surface.

So, what needs to be done to get it re-chromed? Do I need to sand the ever-loving hell out of it and get it slick and smooth, or can the rechromers take care of it?... I know they put it through a process that strips the metal of all the chrome anyway, but it is still bumpy from rust... I don't know if the prep processes will take care of that or not.

    Help plz...

Also, for my first contribution to this site, I will vouch that the Mav's taillight moldings can, after about 15 hours of work apiece, can be straightened with wood blocks and a hammer, sanded to hell, and hand polished to look brand-new and like chrome again!

that's what the rechomers are for... they acid dip them... and will weld them up... don't waist you time ;) sometimes if you go to a bumber guy he will just use yours as a core. and give you someone elses.

I've got the same problem with my front and back bumper (and the chrome around the window, and well, all my chrome basically)

The guy who had my car before me just painted over the bumpers black. It looks hot, actually, until you get close and see all the bubbles underneath. When I can afford body work in the fall, there's going to be a lot to do... *cringes*

i am going to get glass bumpers i think... my front os salvageable.. but the back is not.. i dont think it can be replaced.. i mean its not terrible.. but it is bent

but i like that painted bumper look.. im just not sure if a chrome front and painted back would look cool or not.. im thinking not...

has anyone else done that? chrome front bumper / painted back bumper

If you want, I could post a pic of my painted bumpers to help you decide. (I got a new camera this morning, I'm a bit camera happy) :)

I'm planning to do that with the mav. Chromed on the front, and body color on the back. The color will be Ford Burnt Copper (the one from the King Ranch trucks).

Go for it! We're supposed to innovate since we're Maverickers (y)
