Anyone ever paint their car with a rattle can?

I'm not going to restore this one to perfection, it is more of a toy for me to learn with.

Just wondering results of rattle can coverage.

I know crap in crap out, so I don't expect it to be great, but I think I can make it look nice.

I've primered a car with a rattle can, so flat colors come out okay. But a normal shiny enamel won't look very good as the can spray pattern is so fine and narrow you end up with dry spots and lines. I'd highly recommend at least buying a cheap gun and regular paint to at least make it look presentable.

I just hit the fender to see how it would look and decide if that's what I wanted to do. When it dries I'll see the effect.

Another person told me to get a sprayer. I got a compressor and some air tools, I may just add a sprayer to the mix...gives me something else to learn anyway.

Buy a paint gun and small compressor, and you could have a decent paint job for a couple hundred bucks.

The compressor will come in handy daily from there on out...

Sorry, I must have been typing that response as you posted the one before it.

Since you have the compressor, the cheap part is the paint gun.

This is the one I have, and it works GREAT. Used it 4 times already, and with Epoxy primers each time. Keep it clean and it will definitely get you your money's worth. $49 be sure to get HVLP (non-HVLP is $19), especially if you have a small compressor. Just shoots less air with the paint, and makes much less overspray.

Another thing that would help out is a regulator to control air pressure also. Either @ the gun or compresser (@ the gun works the best but, on the compresser works nice for other tools). I'm glad you gaveup the rattle can idea you'll be much happier! Good Luck

:D Fender looks decent, but nah, don't want the whole car to look like that.

Compressor has a reg on it, but i'll look into one for the gun. I was wondering that earlier, thinking to myself "hrm...wonder how fast the air comes out..what if its too fast.." etc.

    Thanks.

The one that I sent you the link to has a regulator in the box. So, I have a regulator at the compressor, then a fine-tuning regulator at the gun. Supposed to run really low, like 10-12 psi.

get a nice devillbis hvlp gun.there pricy but worth it! hvlp means high pressher low volume.
or a snap on works good. iv ratle canned primer
but after it dries you should "scuff" sand it even
and therealy wash the car and dry it off befor
painting.dont paint outside.the cheapist is to get tarps and tarp off the garage useing duct tape. keeps dust and dirt from the cars finish.
buy the way it dont come out to fast. get an old hood ,hang it up and practice.thats just some good ideas for ya. o ya and were a resporator!

I been picking gray and red buggars for a few days, def need a respirator.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll be scouting out guns this weekend.

I read in another post about some gray flake paint for the trunk....awesome stuff, I got some and love it. Made my trunk look nice, I'll get some pics up in a day or so, nothing fancy, but looks nice I think.

I agree with buying a good gun if you are planning on using it ALOT, but for one or two projects, I wouldn't burn that much money. If you do, you will have a damned nice paint gun just sitting around for many years never being used.

I have one car, don't ever plan on doing anything more than epoxy primering a fender, maybe a hood, etc, so I bought cheap. Even then, it has been sitting in the attic for over 6 months never being used.

Now when I used to paint daily and in bulk when working my way through college, I used Devilbiss, and they worked for years.

For this "garage" project, you can keep it cheap and be perfectly happy with a cheap gun.

Good respirator (but not good enough for epoxy, that crap is NASTY!).

Got this from Lowes, under $30.

1 gallon of automotive paint, a single stage paint... which means you shoot it on the car and it dries gloss, and you dont need a clear coat over the top will run anywhere from $35.00 per gallon on up to $100.00 per gallon. then you will need a 1 QT can of hardner, which runs 20 bucks, and a 1qt can of reducer...

to paint a maverick... outside only.. no door jams, it would run about 75-150 bucks for a cheap paint system that would look fine for awhile.

a paint gun that will work fine an be purchased from summit or jc whitney or checker auto parts... or harbor frieght for about 35 bucks.. and will work just fine... get a 1QT suction fed Conventional Spray gun.. or spring a few extra more bucks for an HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) Spray gun

and DO NOT USE A SPRAY CAN to paint a car. it wont last, at all... and the first time you use a high pressure sprayer, it will flake off
