Ford widened the engine bay on 'Stangs in 1967 to accept a the 390 and 428 big blocks. Even the '64-'66 "Stangs have wider engine bays that Mavericks.
Thanks for what info yall have given me. But the LT1 will be bolted up in the maverick even if I have to use a M2 suspention. Has anyone thought abot the rear notched oil pans So they can clear the Steering linkage on the 62-67 chevy 2s?
Yeah, you can put a 460 in a 67-68 without touching the shock towers. Factory probably would have done it had the 429-460 been in production at the time...
Hello after researching I think I am going to try the mustang 2 suspenion it don't just give more room it also gives a much more cleaner look. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=21532&highlight=460
its a shame the maverick ame along in the decling years of the musle car era, would be very intresting to see what kind of things ford could have done with them
I like the LT engines. Only reverse coolant flow engine made to date in large production. Very good for keeping exhaust seats intact. The other good thing about the LT is that is still accepts aftermarket heads and such. The intake is a really nice short runner, and a good swap for any TPI L98 engine. If spark is an issue, you can always use a ford EDIS8 and a megasquirt controller. Hell, a complete MSII system with wideband control would make for a very very clean install and leave room for upgrades. The LS engine is also a mechanical wonder and the aftermarket supports it well. It's ugly as sin, but when you stroke and poke it to 427 ci, I can look past appearances. Mavericks are supposed to go their own way and stand out from the crowd. To me, seeing a 302W is just as boring as a 350. Way to be different!!!
In this months issue PHR is doing an LS swap in a fox body stang. They made some good points about swapping in the LS engine. After driving a 06 GTO and seeing how that engine moves the heavy GTO...it would be interesting to see how it would make a Maverick perform! I guess your LT1 conversion will have to do, until someone takes on the LS Maverick swap.
I fully support your efforts. Should be cool when you finish. However, if you leave the engine bone stock you're crazy.
Wasn't going to happen. Ford would have never produced a true Maverick muscle car. It would have outperformed the Mustang and that wasn't going to happen. Look at the 74-78 Mustangs. They could be had with 4 bbls and four-speeds. Never offered in the Mavericks. The big sissies.
Stangs didn't have 4v carbs from 74-84... Heck, you couldn't even get a V8 in 74! So for one year, the Maverick actually had more muscle than the Stang!
LT1 will not be bone stock even though its more than enough power it will have a upgraded cam but nothing extreme roller rockers, header and the computer reprogrammed to remove the MAF, EGR and air pump. After researching and measuring The LT1 will go in with the shock towers in place, no M2 suspension required. Here are some measurements 302 Width 18" 351 Width 21 " 460 Width 26" Chevy 350 width 18" The oil pan will be no problem, you have to use a oil pan from a 62-67 Chevy II it is notch to clear the steering on the Chevy IIs and This is what my dad said they used on the 67 or 68 mustang we seen with a Chevy 350. As for the 6 speed trans and trans tunnel on the maverick I will have to research this later as it is still in the TA.
