should I use regular primer on cleaned metal areas of the car or the primer filler that is sandable???? do I have to use regular primer after I apply the primer filler products????? I am getting primer from wal mart to temp protect some areas until I am ready to start the painting part of my project.. (about 1 year away)...

Bare metal needs self etching primer. Paint related threads on here sure bring out alot of different opinions. I still have some metal etch that I wipe down on bare areas, dont know if it is available anymore. I see some guys just use epoxy primer, close to same. If entire car is not bare metal, epoxy primer is good to start with. The entire paintjob depends on what is underneath. Always remember that.

Some of the major companys offer highbuild primers that are direct to metal, they have etch in them. Which is nice if you just have spots of bare metal because you CANT put etch over top anything but metal it is an acid and will breakdown fillers and old paint. However i dont know how many companys offer this but i know SIKKENS does its like a big felt pen that has etch primer in it so can put it on just the spots you need and not get it all over other stuff.

Epoxy is nice if you have large areas of bare metal and most companys will allow you to even put filler over top of expoy.

As far as direct to metal primers im not to sure which companys offer it i do know RM does it is called DP26 you could probably coat and entire car for pretty cheap.

    That's good info

What about areas with lots of surface rust, like under the car lower part of floor pans etc...? Very difficult to clean all the rust from these parts except by sandblasting.

If all loose rust has been cleaned away from an area with sandpaper wire brush etc (most of the area is bare metal except for the notorious small rust pits that nothing works on except sand).

Should we use etching primer directly on the surface, or use rust converter (the stuff that makes the rust turn black) first?

I'm not sure how well the rust converter binds to bare metal that is not rusted and how well the acid primer binds to the rust.

Many people reffer to rust as cancer which is very true the only true way to stop rust is to remove it.... adding some kind of rust "converter" or epoxy will probably slow it down but i seriously doubt it will stop it. Etch is just for pure metal it is a acid that "etchs" into the metal to create a surface that primer can stick too.

Hay VERN, we used to use a primer called featherfill an you can add a rust
inhibitor. the stuff is a catalyst primer but it,s easy to spray! it go,s on thick. harborfreight sells a gun for 10 dollar.
