So I'm pulling an old 67 Mustang hood out of my parents garage and what do I find behind it? A pair of E7 heads. This leaves me with a predicament. I've been porting out the exhaust side on the 351w heads and frankly I'm a little worried I'm going to screw them up if I haven't already. After searching the forums it would seem the E7's may have a slight advantage over the 69 351w heads. Looking at the E7's I can see the exhaust ports look pretty small. I've also read the chamber volume is higher. Although I suppose I can have them milled a little. Basically I'm cheap and want the most horsepower for the least amount of money. So here's my plan. I still have my 351w and after failing 7 yrs ago I'm going to reattempt putting it in the Mav. Tubular Automotive is 2 hours away and I can get a set of ES9 headers for $380. So much for AutoKrafters and their markup. I have no idea what kind of other parts I'll need to put the E7's on the 351w. New custom pushrods maybe ???? Both sets of heads are complete. Whichever I choose will be getting a valve job before going on. And no I cant afford a set of aluminum heads and have been unable to steal a set of gt-40's. So please don't suggest it. That being said I've used the search function and I'm still looking for opinions.
I'd go with the '69 351w heads.. bigger valves and smaller combustion chambers and are basically the same as the gt-40 heads. E7's are junk, thats why you have no problem finding them for free.
NO! E7s are nothing special. If you want a stock head that has potential you have 2 choices: 69-73 351w heads or GT40p heads. Personally, I like the Ws over the Ps, but there are many that would argue.
Also, the ES9s use very small tubes. For the price, you can get big tubes with Crites swap headers, or Hooker has Stang swap headers with big tubes for early Stangs. The Hookers will work with some modding to the engine bay. Dave
scooper said he hates his gt40p because of the spark plug angles and wouldnt have bought them if he knew it was gonna be that hard to change them
I'm probably gonna go with bigger headers I guess. You guys have convinced me. I had read through another thread about bigger primaries and had been leaning that way. I will say this however. I got this 351w out of a 67 mustang along with the headers I'm running now with the 302. I could not get the headers to work with the 351w in the Mav. Thats why I ended up going with the 302 anyway. Hopefully the second attempt isn't as frustrating as the first. I will be notching the towers. Back when I first started the swap I didn't even know there was a Maverick community. Whenever I mentioned my car to someone I got a funny look like I had farted or something. Seems to me like Maverick's are getting a better rap know a days. I must also hope I didn't get to silly with the porting on the 351w heads. Once I get some more carbide bits I'll post some pics and you guys can tell me what you think.
i have to dis-agree. the E7 heads are a nice factory head that has potential. not to mention, they usually sell for about 75-100 dollars so if u find some for free, feel free to lemme know
The exhaust on those heads has a big lump of iron in the port. That can be ground totally out. That lump is what takes that head from mediocre to awesome. Done right, that head matches and even outflows many aftermarket heads. On the subject of 351 cubes: There is a 3.85" stroke crank that can be had aftermarket for only a few hundred bux... Less than 300 if you shop around. Combine that crank with stock rods and 302 .030" over pistons and you get 393 cubes. Figure the money saved from more expensive 351 pistons and rehabbing the old 351 crank, and you have a dirt cheap stroker.
I have seen several sets junked. They came on many engines from the late 80s and early 90s. My truck had a set. They have small ports, small valves, thin castings, and large-ish chambers... I have never heard of anyone actively seeking them out. Most folks toss them for W, P, or aftermarket heads in my circles.
I'm going to stick with the 69 windsor heads. It takes for ever to grind down those bumps. Their freak'in huge and I may have already dulled down one carbide bit on just 2 ports. The bits were from the snap-on guy so many years ago and brand new. Another set with a multitude of sizes is on it's way. Actually I'm hoping my first bit is dull because if it's not I'm not going to be done for year. From my readings online a carbide bit should cut through these heads like butter (well maybe frozen butter ). Maybe I can make a buck on the E7's locally.
good choice i have C9 heads , about 700 bucks in them BEFORE intake cc =136 exhaust cc = 58cc After I = 150cc E = 70 cc i think these are some respectable numbers for a "stock" head 60cc combustion chamber and i had 3 angle valve job , bowls cleaned up and smoothed out...gasket port matched
I love it when people put down E7's. Anyone who has a good air compressor, a die grinder and some good bits can wake up a set of these in about two hours. And some here haven't a clue as to what Ford went thru in developing the GT40 heads (not the 60's versions) Some of that development went into the E7's as well. All they need is to have the exhaust opened up, namely just the walls and roof, blend this into the bowls, remove the Thermactor bumps, then simply smooth the intake sides and contour the bowls. These make great budget heads, the set I have on my 89 Ranger cost me all of $200 to do, and they breathe right up there with the GT40 iron heads. If you've got Windsor heads, use em. If not E7's are a good starter head.

Me too.I loved telling guys all I had was a ported set of E7's when I beat their gt-40 headed cars.I picked up over 2.5 tenths in the 1/8 by just porting the E7's I already had(9.05 down to an 8.79).I had a set of DOOE heads at the time,but they needed a complete rebuild and the E7's were already ok for todays gas and were in good enough shape to run as is.If both sets need a complete overhaul though,the older heads probably are better...not much,but still better(for the larger 351 engine anyway)
