hello again everyone well now it is time to put a chunk in the rear i have a stock 74 5 lug axel code 3 (2.79:1) need to know where to get a decent chunk for it i belive it is an 8" but not sure any help wpuld be greatly aprecated i would like to go to a 3.5?:1 or something i have allready did the v8 swap and front disc off a granada thanks in advanced
You have an 8"... How much do you want to spend? If you keep on the lookout at local yards, you can find decent gears in: Pintos/Bobcats Stang2s Pintos have either 3.40 or 3.55 when they have an 8". Not all Pintos have 8" rears. Bobcats have the same ratios, but limited slip is available. All V8 Stang2s came with 8" limited slip, however they only had 3.00 gears. 4 and 6 cylinder Stang2s had 3.40 and 3.55s, maybe even 3.25s, but you are less likely to get limited slip. Other than junkyard hunting, you can take your chances on eBay or spend 9" money buying new 8" parts. They aren't very strong rears, so I wouldn't spend a big wad on it. Good luck Dave
Look under 6 cylinder Mavs and Comets too. Mine came with 3.40's (77 Comet 6 banger car) Other cars with 8" rears are the late 70's Granada & Monarch, if you're lucky you'll find a 9" under these sometimes.
Those weren't stock D... Mav/Com only came with 2.79 or 3.00 when 8" equipped. A PO must have robbed that gear from a Pinto. That's the easiest place to score a 3.40 I have found.
I plan on running mid 11's or faster on an 8 inch. :evilsmile I aint skeered Hell hath no fury like an 8 in rearend scorned
Keep your chunk, and for $100 you can put whatever gears you want into it. If you aren't sure of your mechanical ability, pay someone another $100 to install it. I have a 3.80 with a spool, did it myself, first time, in the garage with typical tools (including a BFH and dial indicator). PM'd and talked stmanser through his rebuild with spooled 4.11. So far, 100% success rate
Not a Maverick, but a Comet, and I've learned to never say never when it comes to what Ford or Mercury did or didn't do. Been proved wrong too many times.
In 77 a Comet would have had 5 lug 8" stock. So the only part in question is the chunk. If it was undisturbed, it would still have the tag. That isn't a sure indicator, someone could have slapped the tag back in with the Pinto chunk. However, if there was no tag, then you KNOW it has been into.
The tag was in place, that's how I knew the ratio. Chunk's pretty nasty on the outside too, as in years of crud build up.
Comets didn't come with 3.40s either. Either the tag is wrong, or the center chunk was replaced at some point. Check the inside door tag for the axle code. That will tell you what the car left the factory with...
Door tag says "3" for the axle.By the way, someone on here missing a 77 Comet from Georgia? 6 cylinder converted to V8? The guy I bought it from bought it from someone over there.
got my 3.4 from a pinto does fine. Be prepared to change the spedo gear if you want the speed to read right.
