I want to paint the taillight panel black, on my 1972 Mav. What is the correct paint to use? I have seen some jobs where if you even get wax near it, it looks like crap. I don't want a gloss finsih, thinking about semi gloss. Thanks Bob
I would suggest a semi-gloss black.....or use a color called Hot Rod Black. I think it is from House of Colors.
Would one use the same semi-gloss on the hood hump or should it be gloss as the rest of the paint? I can tell the one in this photo is gloss, but I get the idea that some may use the semi. The grill will be a semi-gloss "bumper" paint. I don't know whose car this is, but I like it!
it's not far from me. i seen it on ebay and went to look at it. it has nice new paint, but has some bondo in it. i dont think it's worth what they was asking for it. imo, it's about a 2000-2500 dollar car
Ford called the grille and tail panel paint 'semi-flat' black. Semi-gloss should be same same. I use whichever I find. You definately don't want straight up gloss or flat IMO. Neither of those looks right. 'Satin' black is also another option, but I don't care for the sheen it gets. I never seem to get the sheen even. Stick with a semi IMO. I don't think the Maverick hoods ever got the "hump" painted black??? The Grabbers were vinyl, were they not? I am pretty sure they were not gloss. Mustangs, Cougars, Ford hood scoops, and many other manufacturers cars got the same 'semi' black paint treatment on the hood. IMO that looks much better than gloss. Dave
My body man used Dupont Hot Rod Black for my 71 Grabber Hood and Tail Panel Blackout. Either they no longer produce it or call it something else. It's a Satin Black but not gritty like the factory black that would hold wax if you got it on the blacked out areas. It's a two-part single stage paint and as durable as any other topcoat ... also used it to paint my front Gravel guard ..
Inregards to the black-out on the hood and back panel, I used Satin black with 2 coats of clear with the agent that takes out the shine in the clear. Looks OK by every1
hahaha Power bulge..... Yes the 70 and early 71 had the dual stripes and even the 71 Grabber hood there was a split in the hood stripe that was between the dual scoops. Then the 72 was one solid patch of semi gloss/ semi flat or whatever its called Now I think that is the way they were.. I might have it backwards because you know now that I think about it I can't really remember if Dad's 72 had the split in the hood stripe or not... anyway here are the differences from 1970, 71 and 72. 1970 1971 1972 I might have the 71 and 72 backwards ???
