The last cam I bought was 20 years ago and I got lucky and put together a good combination. I have changed a few things and want some opinions as to what cam would you reccd. My set-up is: 1968 302 .030 H beam rods 10.25 to 1 Edelbrock RPM heads 1.94/1.6 Speed Demon 650 on top of a Weiand accelerator single plane 4.11 locker 3000 stall in a TCi c-4 Have N20 but not thinking I will run it again Car will be light street duty, less than 2000 miles a year and a few car shows. I also will make 10-15 passes a year. The last cam was a Crane 363841: 278/288 adv duration .533/.555 lift at 114 Lobe Seperation What are your thoughts? I want to stay solid lifter (non roller) with this cam
This is a confusing component to buy! I am looking at the Comp Cam 282s and it has VERY close specs to the above cam. Int/Exh duration at .050 236/236 old cam was 238/248. Lift for the old cam was .512/.533 this cam would be .528/.528 And yet Crane said my old cam was good from 3000-6500 rpms (it was) but Comp only states 2,000 to 6,000. What am I missing here? Comp Cams just reccd 31-639-5 242/246 at .050 541 intake and 522 exh good for 2800-7000 Now I am more confused but I need to order soon..
I'd give Comp Cams a call. They should be able to help you. 800-999-0853
Yes, give the cam folks a call! If you tell them what you've got, they will match a cam to it. I did this with Cranecams.
Cam? May I recommend a single pattern hydraulic flat tappet with no more that 215 duration at .050 and all the lift you can get. May have to run 1.7 rockers to get over .500 lift.
215 SAE duration is close to 288 or 290 depending on the lift rate. High energy cam the 215 SAE duration would put the publicised duration at 280.
You don't run a large shot of N20 do you? If not a cam around .542-565 keep them equal Duration 226 Intake 232exhaust lobe seperation angle 110 degree. Thats about as good as it gets without getting radical...... oh and go Hyd roller. The buy in is stiff. The rewuired lifters are 400.00 from care and a cam is 300.00 but you will never wipe another cam again!!!My advice is based on it being hyd roller.... The solids always appear to be larger but because of lash the numbers are really smaller. Or go solid roller. The piece of mind is worth it!!!!
I am looking at the Comp Cam 282s and it has VERY close specs to the above cam. Int/Exh duration at .050 236/236 lift at .528/.528 Talked to a mustang that runs in the 10's on the "other" board and he spins this to 7000. Nice lopey idle and with a 3000 stall should do just fine. Lobe seperation is 110. No MAV, my shot, if I squeeze it, is only 125. My old cam felt plenty radical.
Have to agree on going roller! Had 2 wipe out on a new rebuilt Cleveland, followed directions to a t. This was before the cam makers figured out the oil problem. Only rollers for me. Good Luck
Time and expense is one reason. Also, I have had good luck on the solid side. i.e. this cam, 20+ years! Thanks for the comments. Anyone running the 292s ?
Done! Talked to Comp Cams and they reccd the 282s 236/236 dur at .050 .528/.528 lift and 110 LSA They said that with the new heads split duration cam is not as needed as it use to be. Should be running by Saturday am, will let you know..Thanks for the feedback. Scott
