Hot Rod has an article outlining the "$98 paint job" which is basically rolling on a can of thinned Rust Oleum and polishing the crap out of it...over the course of SEVERAL layers and days. I might give this a try... Any suggestions, hints, etc that might make this less of a mess and more of a success? Should I go to bare metal, or just down to primer (in expert opinion)?
heres how it turned out on someguys stang...looks pretty good http://www.mustangforums.com/upfiles/53517/D2F87E1A0683498AB7931D347089ADBC.jpg http://www.mustangforums.com/upfiles/53517/EEA6CE7CA8AE4A8CB20E69CD0D3E7756.jpg here are some good links 44pages http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=2331682&an=0&page=3#Post2331682 if you dont have enough time for that one ^ http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html
I would KILL To have my maverick look that good... the hot rod article says 12 hours minimum drying time between coats, so it won't be time consuming, just cheap. They also clearly state that you will need MANY coats. I think they said 4 coats before you won't be able to see through to your old colors, or something like that. So, I am looking at 8 coats total +/- to make it look even. But, it will be a protective layer, all one color, until I am ready to put a show-room quality paint job on it. I can still lean on it, swap parts, and not worry about people touching it...which, now that I think about it, might not be a bad idea for the FINAL paint
I gotan $10 paint job on mine 10 cans of the $.99 flat black spray paint from walmart. the hood was already grey when i got it. I rolled flatblack on to my '76 delta 2 years ago, it only took 2 cans and a roller and pan. grand total was under $20
I thought for a moment I was reading Car Craft when I read that yesterday, An artical like that doesn't belong in Hot Rod.
that is just flat out UFB.... I might have to try that on my old Bronco II before I sell it just to say I did it and see if it really works... I mean seeing is believing but then they tell you not to believe everythign you see on the internet so if I actually do it I will let you all know
if you spray on a few cheap cans of 99 cent gloss spray paint and top it off with a few coats of 99 cent clear coat you'd be suprised at the results. use one of those wide plasticoat nozzles and the trigger handle attachment for spray cans. ive used the same techniqe on model cars too and couldnt ask for better results at least for the price
DaMad...I agree...I have seen several sites on the intarweb recently showing great looking paint jobs for cheap, on rollon paint, and I doubted it. But when Hot Rod says you can do it (they don't skimp on the "elbow grease" part) I start to believe it can be done. They even list the moparts website as a link...
The car in Hot Rod Magazine is really beautiful from what I hear(which is more than you hear)... We just finished up a car for Hot Rod which will be given away on Power Tour this year... You can see the drawing for it on page 166 of the same issue as the $98 paint job... Jerry Pitt, the Publisher of Hot Rod, lives around the corner from our shop, and practically lived at our shop for a couple months, said that the Falcon look surprisingly good. They did the car as a joke at first, which is why the person doing it is one of the newer guys. Jerry said he was skeptical before seeing it, but was rather impressed when he saw it!! Alright, I think I am done bragging about how I have the coolest job in the world now... OOO... Check out our Z/28 Nova in Hot Rod, too!!! That think is such a cool car!
Yeah...saw it all, just quit braggin' Makes me sick how those Cali boys get all the fun, the rest of us hear about it all 2nd hand and get 2nd hand parts... j/k...can't wait to get an excuse to come out and see what's REALLY up over there
I'm sorry for bragging!!! I just get excited when our work is noticed.... Supposedly my name will be mentioned in Hot Rod when they put in the feature on the 57 Chevy...The rest of the guys will be in the picture... but I was at school when they took the dang picture.... so I get mentioned instead...
Are you planning on making a living at this car stuff, or are you studying to be something else and just "summering" you way with the car shops? It sounds like you are getting good experience from the right people, and may want to consider a "car career"... Wish I would have had that opportunity...I got stuck with getting 2 degrees and getting a "real" job and have to go "in" 3 days a week
I am certainly planning on having a car related career, and I would especially love to do the same exact thing that I am doing now.
