Ah, but there IS a difference bewteen these spindles.......... The Versailles units are not the same, and use a different ball joint (and tie rods ends too, I think, I'm not 100% on the ends) You stated it "shouldn't be neccessary" to change tie rod ends, but while it may not be neccessary, why reuse the old ends when you can spend a few dollars more for the correct new ones ?
Versailles spindles are different from Granada/Monarch? Okay, I've never looked at Versailles spindles, so I'll take your word for it. As for the tie-rod ends; if they are in good condition and if the shafts are the right length, why replace them?...
As for his original question, the 71 Montego tie rod ends are different from the 70's Mav, Comet, Granada, Monarch and Versailles. P/N for the Montego ends is ES387 (R & L) and the others is ES 445 ( R & L) So there's something different about the spindles. Same part number ends are used on the 71-73 Stangs (ES387) I can see reusing the ends if they're obviously new or in good shape too, but a little investigation into the part numbers online (I used Autozone's site) yeilds answers as to what interchanges. I did all this twenty years ago in doing a disc swap on a 67 Stang using 71 Stang spindles. All it takes is a little time in the books.
Hey D, you are dead on most accounts and TL is arguing to get your goat... However, I would be curious to know if the parts page you are looking at here shows other tie rod ends for Mavericks. There were at least two tie rod ends used because not all Maverick ends are interchangeable. Often, depending on year and equipment, ends have to be changed when doing spindles. Another thing to consider is that the ends might have a difference as small as having a zerk or not. That is enough to warrant a different PN, but the stuff will still bolt up fine. Just some thoughts.
What? Y'alls fingers are broke ? Autozone.com................ has what you're looking for. (the answers)
Index finger, right ? Ain't got time to look this stuff up again, got to hit the sack. 5am comes around early.
I would not put anything other than Maverick/Comet or Granada/Monarch spindles on these cars, unless they are the same. They are designed to work with these cars, and you don't risk alignment problems or parts interchangeability problems...
There are many cars that use the same spindles. The only difference is the diameter of the tie rod hole that we have been arguing over. All the other geometry is the same, so no alignment issues. Either your tie rod bolt fits, or it doesn't... Change the end. Think about why Maverick/Granada spindles are so sought after. It just isn't the Mav community that seeks them out. Folks with any Falcon, many Fairlanes, many Cougars, and 64.5 to 73 Stangs all look for our spindles to get disc brakes. If they just fit Mavs and Granadas, then there would be plenty to go around and they would be dirt cheap. I have 68 Montego brakes built and ready to go on the Sprint, and have Granada discs ready for my 75... My uncle has had 69 Torino discs on his 70 model for years. The stuff is all very much alike and interchangeable. To limit yourself to Maverick only discs is to overlook the odd other spindle set that might present itself to you cheaply. Just a thought. Dave
Did either of you look up the ball joint part number for all these, to see if there was something else different ? The Versailles spindles I know had a larger ball joint hole. I never thought about the 70-71 (or later) Torino, Montego spindles for swaps before. When the weather cools, I know where there's another set of spindles on a Maverick I'm gonna rescue. Same car I got the manual pedal and hanger from for my 77 Comet. Hope it's still there by then.
