got me a 72 comet im going to muscle car it , would like to go from power sterring to manual. how tough of a job is it new gear box ? i tkink and can any body use the take offs new to this site and finding a weath of stuff that is going to help thank you in advance for your expertise
You will want to get an adapter which is available from any Mustang supply house. It will replace the control valve down on the linkage, which is the source of most of the play in a ps system. Then you can remove the rest of the ps stuff.
or...get a...drag link and pitman arm...from a non p/s car. (a '69.5 is what i used) (thanks Mike) ......
However, a non-power steering gear box makes it easier to turn. It has a different steering ratio than the power gear box. I had to do it to mine. My car was a monster to steer until I changed the box out.
Its harder to turn, but takes less turns. I like the feel of the power box with manual steer but I don`t parralel park often
with th p/s the steering the car felt like it was floating...now it feels like it is on the road. my steering wheel is not stock but not a small Grant either. maybe when i get older i might want a ...manual box also... ...and i can't see when you're driving it on and off your trailer it would be a problem anyway... ......

I have no problem with my power steering box in my '73 either. I don't really notice that much of a difference in effort over the non power box.
Food for thought? My 76' mav has a manual gearbox with power assist? Behind the driver's side tire there's a cylinder attached to the linkage, which is how to my understanding the power steering fucntions, but yet i still feel the road while having the luxury of not fighting the wheel in the white castle drive-thru, this may be an option for you to adapt your car? mine came stock this way supposedly and i love it, except that the cylinder leaks, but a ford buddy of mine that talked me into givin' up my GM fetish (thankfully) told me this was common on a lot of cars, maby someone has the info on which cars had it, unless this is what your trying to do away with... anyone have a suggestion?
That is the power steer set up on these cars. The boxes themselves are physically the same, but have different ratios. The ps box has less turns lock to lock. I have always found the ps set up to be drifty at best, and always prone to leaks. I always run manual steering with a ps box. I dont mind the extra effort.
