Has anyone or seen anyone powder coat thier bumpers black instead of having them rechromed? I am thinking about going this route with the bumpers to my 70 Maverick. I am thinking of painting the car like a Vitamin C orange. Any thoughts?
I forgot to mention I am thinking of having all the trim except the rear taillight trim powder coated black as well. The rear taillight trim I am thinking of painted orange to match the car, because I am going to black out the rear portion. Any black accenting will be done in either glossy or flat black to match the powder coat the best.
i don't thik i'd like the tail light trim in orange. just because the color will be too much of a contrast to the black and look really out of place. JMO. i think it would be neat to match the color of the car with a powdercoated bumper. lots of cars have the bumpers painted the same color. so that should give you an idea of what it would look like.
Good point about the rear taillight trim, Don. Do you think it should be black? What should I do with all of the rest of the trim on the car? Thanks for your help.
I have had the same thought with my Mav. Here is a link to a Yellow Comet that had the rest of the chrome blacked out but not the bumpers. I hope this help you decide if you want to do it or not. It was at this years Knotts Berry Farm all Fords show. I agree with Don about the taillight trim. http://mmb.maverick.to/attachment.php?attachmentid=20428&d=1177298459
depends on what trim you have. clicl on my picture icon and you can see 1 of my cars. the blue used to have trim down the side. i had it removed and welded up. the rest is black except for the chrome bumpers.
i think a little chrome looks good. wheels, door locks, glass trim, etc. i don't think your going to get totally away from it all.
I painted my son's bumpers and side marker housings Argent Silver to match the stripe on the hood. Fred
I blasted the bumpers with metal shot. I did it at a local foundry with an enclosed cabinet that both bumpers fit into. The shot blasts out from all directions while the table the parts are on rotates slowly. I think they equipment is called a " Wheel-A-Brator". it removed all of the crome and left a nice surface. I then sanded them with 80 grit, applied self etching primer, urethane primer and finally the Argent Silver Chroma Base base coat/clear coat paint. I tried sanding therm but that didn't work. You can grind the chrome but it will leave an uneven surface. You may be able to have a plating shop remove remove the chrome for you. Fred
