We are planning on it,,, along with a ton of other parts,,, just takes a little time getting the tooling done,,,, Joe
Cool!! I'm curious... can you explain what's involved in reproducing part like you do? You are talking about tooling...and i dont know what you mean.
I could use a driver side on my 72... The only thing that might keep me from buying a set is the fact that I don't know how to replace a door skin. Depending on price, and my reluctance level, my 75 could use a driver side as well. Niether car needs them for rust, but just plain dings and small dents. I'd rather put in straight metal than body filler...
"Tooling" is the name for unique jigs, metal brake shapes, and molds that need to be custom made for each part. If you want to use a sheet metal press (for example) to punch a sheet of steel into a shape, you need to make tooling for that press to get it to make the shape you want. Then, that tooling is only good for making that one part. Each and every part made needs unique shapes. The metal presses are huge and expensive, but they never change. The tooling for those presses are expensive too, because they are custom made, and must be changed for each and every part you intend to mold or press. Basically every part (left and right) must be reverse engineered into a mold or die to make a repop part. Tooling... Expensive and time consuming process. Edit: To clarify... When I say the tooling must be changed for each and every part, I mean part type. You can use a driver door tooling to make a run of 1000 driver door skins if you like, but then you have to replace that tooling with a whole other set of custom made toolings to do a run of passenger door skins.
I would be very interested in the both the fender apron and battery tray. My otherwise-very-solid car had a soggy piece of plywood under the battery when I bought it, 15 years ago. Took that out and saw the ground, lots of it. If batteries did to other cars what happened to mine, I bet you sell a lot of these sets. I think door skins are a great idea too. I know my drivers door has been repaired in the past. I imagining all kinds of ugliness under that paint. I've seen door skins replaced and it doesn't look that tough to do. Grind off the old one on the edges until it breaks loose, and lightly hammer and dolly the new one to fold the edges into place.
I see. Thanks for the info! So if i understand right, when you have the tooling made for a part, you have to change this tooling if you want to make another part (on the press) but if you want to remake part #1, you just re-use the first tooling that is already made to reproduce the part?
