Tried a search and got everything but,,,, any recomendations for a nice sounding but not raspy system. Hedman headers and 3" with dual chamberd flowmasters now, end just in frt of the rear. Neighbor is being an ass, says car is too loud and vibrates evrything in his house. Are there any complete systems that will work , like maybe one for a stang? Any idea is a good one..thanks
Sounds like his problem, not yours! The good thing about big exhaust like that is that it isn't loud, it just vibrates everything. My 2.5" flows did that... I couldn't take the interior resonance though.
I know that it is tough living with neighbors sometimes. If they are legal and you operate them only during "normal" hours he really shouldn't complain but if you think you need to do something to apease him then run the pipes over the axle. That will quiet it down a bit and if you keep it pointed away from him it will be noticeably quieter for him. Putting new mufflers on will help but adding pipes over the axle help more sometimes.
I know what not to do! My Plymouth has full 3" with aero-turbine bullets behind the axle flanking the gas tank. No cross-over. Idling next to my bros flowmaster 2-chambered big block camaro, you can't hear his car. And when we raced, He couldnt hear his own car at WOT! Simply put, too loud, Its not what I expected when I chose to use those components. Every exhaust system is like a science experiment. If I was in your shoes I would try this: 3" mandrel bent into a Dr.Gas X-pipe - 3" inlets x 2.5" Outlets. into 2.5" stainless Borla Performance turbo mufflers. I would keep the side exits. That would be worlds quieter, still have a nice tone, and I would bet anything you would actually make more power. The x will easily compensate for the reduction to 2-1/2" mufflers. And to make it even better, install electric cut outs between the X and the mufflers (so you still benefit from the x). Then you will be L.O.D. (LOUD ON DEMAND!) As long as you are paying for it I might as well make it the best! Good luck, hope you choose something cool!
Aww man, your car sounds awesome! It's a shame you might have to change it... I would try running full pipes back it should quiet it down a bit, as others have said. Good luck! -Corbin
those electric cut outs are bad ass, i was going to get a set you have you manually open for my olds. that is when i get an exhaust on lol
Tip: H-pipes quiet the exhaust. Especially when sized the same as the main pipes. X-pipes tend to increase sound. If you are concerned for your neighbor, I would put a 3" H-pipe and run 2.5" to 3" (if you can) pipes out the rear. After those two mods, I think you can say you have done everything reasonably possible. Afterall, you don't want him to cause you to buy new mufflers, that is unreasonably expensive. Especially considering that you are legal just the way you are. If your car is legal for the public roads, he doesn't have a leg to stand on at your home... unless you backed up to his bedroom window at 3am and gunned it!
That is incorrect. http://www.drgas.com They are having server problems today, but I dug up this quote: Here's some more reading: http://www.torquetechexh.com/xpipe.htm http://www.magnaflow.com/05news/magazine/05racepgs.asp http://www.78ta.com/smf/index.php?topic=1892.15
If the car is street legal the way it is, I don't see that it's your problem. When my dad built his Comet, the guy that lived next to us really did move after all his attempts (calling the cops and such) failed. The next guy that moved in had an old VW Beetle for a daily driver and a '65 Galaxie project car with a built 351C in it. No problems from there on out. Where we live now, me and the guy across the street butt heads every once in a while (especially when I bought the Fiat, which has Hooker headers that dump directly into glass packs that have a 90 degree elbow on the other end that exit in front of the rear wheels, talk about LOUD), but we've pretty much got it worked out now.
Thanks for all the info Now to just decide what to do. Leaning toward 2 1/2 out the back off of the existing muffflers along with adding an H pipe...
I am not out for a pissing match, but I speak from experience. Go on the F-body or late Stang boards... It's common knowledge that sound is not tamed for those with X-pipes. Also, that quote sounds like a commercial. I read an interview with Dr. Gas himself, forgot his proper name... Anyway he pretty much said bluntly that X-pipes are only good for about a 2-4% power increase at 8 or 9000 rpm on open exhaust Nascar engines. He said that he was going to sell them to anyone that wanted them, and the producer (he sold the concept to) has plenty of sales hype, but that he sees little gain when they are put on street engines. So if you have a 9k rpm, open exhaust Nascar engine, they are worth it. He said that Nascar teams regularly spend big dough for tiny increases that don't mean squat on the street. Dave
I've attempted to pick up where he left off, guess I've been slacking lately. Oh yeah. Everybody knows you don't need more than 1" diameter pipe and sidepipes.
