I have been asking questions about pulling the motor and engine stands etc... You guys have been great. I have another question. When I disconnect the motor from the trans will trans fluid leak all over? If so should I drain it first? Where is the drain for the trans on a 302 automatic, 1972?
If you unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate and leave it in the transmission, it will not dump fluid. There is no drain, you just have to pull the pan.
my friend at my trans. shop loaned me the (plug) for the tailshaft. you can wrap the tailshaft end in plastic, tape it and have the same thing. it is going to be a mess no matter what direction you go... it leaks when you undo the lines at the radiator, when you undo the lines at the trans.(lowering the rear of the trans. makes this easier), when you pull the trans. loose fron the motor and when you pull the radiator... pulling...motor and trans. together is still messy but easier... ...
When you have it out, Go to O'Rielly's and get an Trany drain plug. They cost $6. Makes it a lot easier next time
Tailshaft and speedo plugs ? That's what old parts are for. Slip yoke for the tail, cut a speedo plug with gear off a junker.
even if you drain the tranny you're probably going to get some on the floor anyway. i always put one of he large drip pans underneath. if you seperate the engine and tranny, undo the convertor also. when you pull the convertor back out you might spill a little. again, i make sure i do this over the drip pan.
