I picked up Mustang Monthly magazine today, and on page 30 (November issue) is the HOW TO on swapping our power assisted steering systems with an "Integral Power Steering" system. Basically, it is a steering gearbox with the power steering components inside it, and you can lose all the hoses and power ram/power valve crap that gives us the "swim" that our PS systems have and all the leaks. It didn't list prices, and sounds like it is still in production, but they did a step by step installation article in this issue. I can post pics if anyone wishes, or just by the magazine...
I saw that also, I think it looks a little big to fit in our cars, and with headers it would be worse. Would be cool if it does work.
"The Simpler Saginaw With the Mustang's larger platform for '71 came integral power steering. At the time, big Fords had Ford's own integral power steering; Mustangs received a Saginaw unit from General Motors. Saginaw power steering eliminated sloppy underpinnings and leakage." From: HERE Is that it? I dunno bout PS.
yea, i like that alot better. thats how all my GM cars are set up except the hoses wouldnt be as long since the gear box is more foward right under the p/s pump
The article says it is for 65-70 mustangs, and clearly states that it is still a work in progress (parts will probably look a little different as they work out any bugs they find during R&D). Be cool if they fit, ESPECIALLY with headers...
If the 65-70 Mustang steering box was a direct swap for the Maverick box it should work. I don't think they are. Someone with a Hollander Interchange manual could look it up.
I was thinking about this for my 63 fairlane since a forum member at fordmuscle did a similar conversion to his 64 fairlane using a intergral power steering box from a 79 malibu with a modified sector shaft.there is less room in the fairlanes than the mavericks so there is a posibility that a intermediate gm steering box or a vega steering box could work.
I was reading an article recently that said where the Mav steering box supposedly came from.. but it was not Mustang. (Not that I would call it an authoritative source) I can't remember, I'll have to dig it up. Edit: it was a Time magazine article from '69, and it says it came from the Fairlane. It's not listed on Charlie's interchange page. http://www.maverick.to/grabber/interchange.html
I belive the 69 1/2 maverick was based on the falcon stuff. could be wrong though...have been before. Robert
I was just reading on the Stangnet about swapping in a Toyota Celica/Corona steering box w/integral PS. The years were approx 78-81 models, and Corolla would NOT work. Someone on eBay is selling the boxes cleaned up and fitted with hoses, to the Stang guys for around 600 bux. A member bought one and reverse engineered it. Then told everyone where to get the boxes. I can't right now, but I will post a link to the threads later.
