I know this is an old post but wanted to input what I know on this....I had a local person email me today complimenting me on my Comet Stabber and said he hadn't seen one in years. I knew of the Comet Stabber because I was born and raised in the Atlanta area and was 16 years old in 1972 which is when I fell in love with the Comet's, My Father and I went to Pugmire Lincoln Mercury in Atlanta and they did indeed have the Comet Stabber. After many years and getting the kids raised and gone I finally have my Comet GT.
I know Pugmire and Jacky Jones sold the BearCat package ... I though the Stabbers were a package sold in the mid and western states.
nice looking car. i know you plan on changing the wheels but i like them. not your normal everyday wheel.
I've been in Atlanta all my life and I remember Pugmire selling the Comets with the sidepipes. I don't remember what they called them. Stabber does sounds familiar. A guy named Frank Martin (two years older than me) had one when I was high school. He built a very hot 320 and put a four-speed in it. It was quickest car in Henry County from 1972 until 1976. His Comet and Dyno Don are responsible for my love of Mavericks and Comets. I seem to remember a jazzed up Bobcat being sold locally and being called a Bearcat. P.S. In 1976, I unveiled my '67 Fairlane with a 450 HP 297 (289 - .060 over) and it was quickest and baddest car in the Southern Crescent until I took it apart and sold in 1978.
Hated to start back up and old subject, but I had talked about the Stabber throught the years and when the guy emailed me commenting "nice stabber" it jarred my memory loose again, very few remembered them in the past several years when I would tell them of the first new car I wanted but I remembered it because I wanted one so badly when I was 16 but couldnt afford it, so I remeber definitely they were local. By the way my first car ended up being a 1965 Pontiac Lemans with a 326. By the way I still want Cragars but my wife loves the wheels on my car as well, does anyone know the proper name or style of these wheels?
We had a set of those wheels, made by American Racing, with different center caps, on my mom's 74 LTD. Dad bought 'em and put them on there for her birthday. I seem to remember the word "turbine" being in the name.
Back in the day, those type of wheels were always referred as turbine wheels, like Terry said. I really like them on your car, perfect IMHO. I have a similar set that are original to my 79 Z-28. Dan
BearCat was the Comet Package sold by Jacky Jones for sure ... I spoke to him in person about them at the Ford South show at AMS ...
That is an awesome postcard, I am going to see if I can find out more on the Stabber as my interest in this has been revived, I remember it having side pipes and being a straight shift but cant remember the wheels it had.
I am trying to remember before yesterday, so I'm not writing anything in blood. I don't remember the Comet Bearcat around here. I do remember seeing Comets with the factory slots and side pipes and I do remember seeing some tricked Bobcats that were sold by local dealers. In the '60's and early '70's, Gainesville, GA was not part of the metro Atlanta area. Back then, a trip to Gainesville was considered "going out of town" and they did not advertise on Atlanta's three TV stations.
My mom had a set of those on her '77 Corvette back in the late 70's/early 80's. The car is still around (totally restored to showroom condition), but the wheels are long gone.
My dad might be able to confirm this but his Comet GT which everyone told us was a Bearcat came with the side pipes. He took them off because it kept burning my mom...LOL Here are pics of his "Bearcat". First post has the pics in it. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=24343
