    EDIT:

Check the date on this thing. Y'all noobs stop voting in my old-assed thread! :biglaugh:

It's too late. The Maverick has gangster tint, it's been there half a year, and your votes won't make me peel it off!

    Hey guys,

I think I see window tint in my near future. Probably gonna do it myself, as I've done it successfully once before, and it looks like the Mav won't be terribly complicated to do.

I haven't made up my mind about how I want to go about it though, from a safety, appearance and legality standpoint. Here are the options I'm considering:

~35% on the rear and all of the side glass. Might not look as good (or it might look great, don't know) but it will certainly be legal.

~35% on the door glass, ~20% on the rear quarters and back glass. (probably legal)

~20% on the doors, ~5% on the rest. (probably not legal, maybe not safe)

~20% all around. (questionable legality, probably safe, should look good)

~5% all around. (I've got insurance and they've got brakes. Damn the law, cops will never take me alive anyway.)

What do y'all think? Anybody got experiences and/or pictures to share? Here's my car, by the way.

    Thanks!

around here the law is no tint on the front doors or windshield, do whatever you want on the back doors and rear window.

may be diffrent in your state though

i'd do 35 on the doors and 5 on the 1/4's and rear glass

ya know they also have 2.5 if you wanna go even darker

Thanks. I'm not sure what the law is around here, (I suppose finding out would be a good start, huh?) but I drove a black '91 Camaro around for a year with dark tint all over, and if ever there was a car that screamed, "this guy sells meth," that would be the one, but they never gave me trouble. I guess in Memphis they're more concerned catching criminals than harassing people.

Of course, I'm new here. I could be very wrong...

    Here's another question for everybody:

For those of you who have done this yourselves, how much tint film did you buy?

another good thing about my area is that the cops and the DMV really let alot of things slide when it comes to "classic" cars. the teeneage in the ricer integra wouldnt be able to drive from one side of town to the other with 5% tint and not get a ticket, but i could probably slide through in my maverick no prob.

me and my friend took his nissan through inspection a few months ago and the guy made him roll his windows up so they could see if they were tinted. when i took my cutlass through they didnt even ask or show any sign that they cared they were down.

but checking your local laws would be the best choice

ive used that walmart stuff and 3 years later it still looks good. i did the rear 1/4's and rear window of my cutlass in 5% and looks just as good now as it did then, tho i do think its faded out a little. its probabaly more like 10%. it took me 4 rolls to do it but as much as i messed up i could have probably done it in 2

I like the looks of the real dark tint. I have it on my 03 F250. However it does suck at night, especially when trying to back up. I am undecided on tinting my GT.

I've tinted many of my own cars and use 5% everywhere (except the windshield). The law in Oklahoma is 35% front doors and 20% rear (I think). I've run 5% for years and never had a problem. The darkest I ever had was on a '86 Ford truck. I used 2 layers of 5% and one layer of 20%. The windows looked solid black. Yes - it was a pain at night.

I've tinted Mavericks before. The hardest part is the rear glass. There isn't much room to work.

WOW!!! The tint in the AFTER picture even makes the back tires look bigger:rofl2:

Looks good. I have 35 on all windows of all my cars, except the mav. I think it is nice looking and performs well day or night...

Never get harrassed by the cops because there is little doubt about if they are legal or not.

Another thing to look at...if you put 35 on the tinted version of the maverick windows, it will actually be a little darker. I lucked out and got a car with tinted windows. I didn't know it until I bought a door out of a junk yard and popped the glass out, and it was noticeably lighter than the ones in my car. Mine had an almost cobalt-bluish tint to them. This was tinted glass, not an adhesive laminate. So, when you get the 35 put on, they will put a sticker on there that says DMV/DPS approved, 35% even though it is a bit darker.

btw whats the lay with the "mirror" tint?

i dont really like it but its so reflective you really cant see inside the car. if i was selling drugs or some illegal activity like that i'd definatly have that stuff put on

A friend of mine has 20% on all windows of his '99 GT except the windshield. He has been driving that car everyday since last February, and hasn't had a problem with the Police. So I plan to do the same on my '73.

My dad had a '95 GT with the mirror tint on all windows except the windshield, you could hardly see in the car unless there was direct sunlight on the opposite side of the car. He drove that car for a couple of years and never got pulled over. Other areas may vary, but around here they have a severely understaffed Police force, so I think they have other things to worry about besides peoples window tint.

I think I have 5%. I love the look of dark tint, there are a few drawbacks though. Besides being way beyond the legal limit, vision is definitely hampered, and it seems to compound when raining/snowing. At car shows I must roll the windows down or the interior cant be seen. And its still pretty dark in there due to the tinted rear windows. Since I drive this Mav only a couple of thousand miles a year, and only in good weather, Its not a big issue. I have owned a daily driver with dark tint, and it was a bit much for my taste. It sucks to have to roll your window down to see clearly through your side view mirror.

PS. Windshield tinting is a mistake. Stay away from that idea.
