Hello all, I was wondering, what size rear-end was in the early mustangs, and if it was an 8in. what gear ratio(s) were available? I probably(hopefully)will have the 302 stuffed into the maverick by the end of the month, and I am thinking of gearing the mav. down just a bit ie: 3.55. Mustangs are MUCH easier to find around here, thatn mavs, so I appreciate ANY input from ya'll. Thanks Preston
8in rear end Was wondering if you are replacing the whole housing or just the center section. Most all 8in center sections will interchange, according to my charts available, 3.40 was as deep a gear I could fine. But my info is a bit outdated on that, aftermarket gears for the 8in can go down to 4.62. Like the previous post I have run one in drag cars for years with little or no problems. Some were hooked up to some very high HP engines and all used a spool with stock axles. After switching to a shortned 57 Ford 9in for a lower gear ratio, even used the 8in Mav axles in it. Still in use today in my Fairmont.
The 65 66 will work it is slightly wider than the maverick but you can play with wheel offset.I have one in my 69.5
While very hard to locate, if you get a chance to look at a Haynes 65/73 Mustang Cougar book, page 4 will show all the ratios that could have been used. They range from 2.35 to 4.30 and there were a few more in later years.
