Are there any options for a locking gas cap for mavericks? I'm the king of paranoia and I'm worried about finishing the car only to have some punk pour something in my gas tank and blow it all to hell. I have an idea of how to make a hinge-like lock that swings "over" the cap and locks at the trunk, but if I don't do it just right it will look hideous. I'd feel better buying a factory made clean looking gas cap. I thought there might be some kind of compatible mustang part or something. I mean, surely I'm not the first guy to think this.

I had a properly-sized locking cap on my white Comet, but that was 1980. It was the large size like the original that came on the car. I think it was even purchased at K-Mart, I mean, they were really commonly available way back then.

It did not flip up like what you are looking for. It replaced the cap, and after you unlocked it, you just took it off the car.

Many of the other locking caps available back then were similar but too small of a diameter and would have looked goofy. This one looked OK on the car, you hardly noticed anything was different.

Maybe these are still out there ... JC Whitney?

Eric, can you post a pic or two of how you have ir installed in your car?

Right now that part of my car is all in pieces so no assembled pics. It is a pretty simple install. Just mounts to the truck support behind the gas cap and the pin goes through the tail panel at the filler pipe flange. You drill a 1/4" hole into the backing plate of the deluxe cap and the pin locks into that hole. Prevents the cap from turning and being stolen easily. The only minor downfall is you have to open the trunk to pull the pin out to open the cap for fueling.

But, it's only $10. Minor inconvenience to save a deluxe cap.

Thanks, everyone! Btw, captain comet, I wasn't trying to say I wanted a lock that swings over, I was saying that's the kind I would try to build if I couldn't find anything else. Thanks again guys.

Mmmmmm .... food for thought ...

A magnetic cap that you can pop on there over the red stripe and key slot ... a steerhead maybe ...

Awesome idea - that looks just about the right size for one of Dan's peel and stick steerheads for the wheel centers. Could be stuck onto a piece or refrigerator magnet stock. What a low cost alternative to the deluxe cap!

Good thinking Jeff and Eric. I'm just going to have to try that.
That would look great and a little cleaner. Hmmm... Who's Dan and how much are the peel and stick ones?

(Btw I'm winning the bid with 10 hours to go. Keeping my fingers crossed)
