So, I now have yet another question for you guys and gals, when painting what causes orange peel? we used a HVLP gun at about 15 lbs, the gun has a 1.4 nozel. Also the humidity was only 20% light wind 5-10 mph and the tep was 75.

    thanks to all
    ALex.

Could be a lot of things or a combination of a couple...Paint is not getting busted up enough by the gun or it isn't flattening out on the surface. Pressure sounds low even for a HVLP. I am usually running mine at about 25 at the gun (pressure drops the longer the hose)

Try these one at a time on an old practice part
    *add a little more pressure
    *add a little more thinnner
*make sure you are using the right reducer temp range
*check the nozzel on the gun to make sure the ports on the side of the tip are not plugged and yo uare getting a good fan pattern

    light wind 5-10 mph ?

What does that mean? You painted outdoors?

The paint did not properly atomize. Think of the paint coming out of the gun in dropplets. If the dropplets are to large they will not flow out smooth. You need to have the droplets small enough to flow out. Check what Cleaver has suggested. With an HVLP Gun the CFM's are more important than the Preasure. Does your air compressor have the CFM's to run the gun?

it was painted in a room but........a wall fell down, not hard just kinda started to move then I grabed it and layed it down.... Air pressure sounds like the cause, I'll go and give it a try!

i run my pressure at 40psi. you have to have a pretty good compressor to stay up with hvlp guns. people just as well get ready to use hvlp guns as the goverment will be requireing them before.

could be wrong reducer for temp as cleavor said.If its a fast reducer(too fast) the paint wont lay down(drying before it gets a chance to blend).Could also be fluid flow past needle isnt enough either. You should be able to adjust the fluid flow with the knob on the back of the gun(the one you unscrew to remove the needle usually)Try backing it out a bit.You will allways have orange peel,( the biggie is how much)Gun quality can contribute to this as well.Better guns tend to create less orange peel.Dont forget distance from the panels either.(too far, lots of orange peel, too close, runs, sags gets blotchy)Good luck.
