Hey everyone, thanks for the help and tips. No, I'm not using the "blue" stuff. I don't have the package in front of me so I don't know the part number, but I know it was a 3M product that I've used before when I painted cars (never tried it on these headlight doors however). So, I'll head out to another auto parts store and pick up the blue tape (which I assume is also made by 3M?) and give that a try.

Thanks again for the suggestions, I really appreciate it!

Dave, can't wait to see the final product, it's looking nice from what I can see....

They're made of stainless steel. Here's what you'd have if you stripped it down to the metal. Polishing up would leave you with a chrome looking piece.

If you're using the blue plastic type tape , it may help to give it a "bit" of strech as you try to make the turns. Also a heat gun lighly applied , or a hair dryer would be a help. It takes a bit of patience and practice. Don't go to auto parts store, go to a auto paint supply store, any body shop will have what you need and probably sell you a roll .
But it is a PIA to get it to lay down tight on sharp curves..

I thought some years were aluminum and some were steel...

    I am probably mistaken.

    Someone know for sure?

It is a low grade stainless with a high nickel content. Therefore it is ferromagnetic making it hard to magnetize. They did it so it did not corrode as easily.

I want to again thank everyone for the tips on this project. Here's an update:

I went out looking for the blue masking tape, but wasn't having any luck (at least at 1/4" width) when the paint guy strongly recommended a product from Colad (product code 904006). I was apprehensive, but he said it would do the trick. I went home and to my surprise, I didn't have any problems at all! The adhesive stuck very well and the material didn't bunch up at all on the curves! I'm very happy with the results and it was easy to work with. Here is a web link if you want more details.

I always just used regular everyday 1/4 masking tape and never had a problem.
