Gas Tank - Removal & Cleaning -UPDATE - Leaking

Durn Maverick is burnin through fuel fitlers. I might as a well bite the bullet and clean the tank out. Ive got a couple questions:

1)Removal looks straight forward. After removing the accessories & filler neck, loosen one side of the straps and it should come out, (in theory) correct?

    2) I searched these forums and the internet, and there seems to be a different response from every person on earth. What's the best way to clean the tank out?

    3) My grandfather (original owner) said the original tank rusted out and he put in a "slgihtly different" tank. I don't know what the original size is, but this one is an estimated 20+ gallons. Any ideas what it came out of?

If it's a Maverick tank, you'll have to undo both straps. Once you get it out take it to a rad shop and have them clean it out.
It may be the 76 style tank, which is larger than the stock 71-74 tank, no big deal.

    Thanks guys, good info!

I got the tank ready to come out this evening. Ran out of light so Ill finish it in the morning. I do have another question. Does the filler neck stay on the car or does it come off with the tank?

Oh, and no pictures. Couldnt get wide enough to show anything informative.

the way i do it is...take the bolts out under the gas cap, remove the screws in the seal in the bottom of the trunk floor and remove the tube out the hole in the tailpanel...be careful with the ...tank seal...i spray lube it first...:yup: i wouldn't remove it from the tank...good luck...

    ......

Of course that's how it's done... After all, wouldn't want to make removing the tank TOO easy

I assume these bolts come off, and this peice as a whole comes off? Mine is painted over, so itll probably be slightly noticable that it's been removed once I put it back on. Especially with the bolt heads and around the bolt heads.

Is it *possible* to remove the tank with the neck still bolted to the car?

    Thanks Frank.

Gotta point there... Last thing I need is to hit the go-go pedal and have gas slosh out the back of the tank.

    Im about 3 - 3.5 hours south of I20/Birmingham.

The tank is out. It doesn't look like itll be too difficult to get back in with the filler neck still in place. Knock on wood.

Is that the model that had the one year tank that is hard to find? If so, goodluck to you. How bad is it rusted?

I got the tank cleaned out. It's much better now. I used a couple bottles of rust remover + soap + acetone (not sure why) + gravel... Lookin good. It's dryin out now. May wait till monday to put the tank back in, depending on how long it takes to dry.

Here's a photo of the inside of the tank. No wonder my fuel filters were gettin clogged.

Dried faster than I thought. Went back on fairly easily, even with the filler neck on. New Problem...

Its got aquite a large leak around the sending unit/gauge area. I didn't mess with that... not even sure how to remove it. Looks like it rotates off? How in the hell do you get it to rotate? Also, I assume there's a gasket there I can replace?

Auto Krafters has the seal... IF it's like the 73 it has a ring that you take off then the unit comes straight out. Did you use a chain to slosh around the inside the tank as you cleaned it?

Ahh. Ok, easier then I thought it'd be. Came off with no problem.

I didn't use a chain. Used just gravel.
