Do you still have the title for the green car? I know it's illegal but I would swap the vins w/ the burnt car. Ever heard the term "rebodied"?
if nothing else, i'd swap the VIN's. yes it is wrong and illegal to say the least but it keeps another old car on the road and like Jamie explained, who are they to say that the VIN is wrong if they can't prove it. I have a good '75 2dr title and a good '73 4dr title in hand if for some reason i ever run into this problem but everyone has their own morals and such so do what makes you feel comfortable
Hey Jason, how about making up a bill of sale, ask one of the GA guys if you can use their name as the seller of the car, then take the bill of sale to the FL DMV and get the car titled. My car was from GA I was given a bill of sale, once back to FL I got it titled. Should work?
i am working with one of the georgia guys on this. he is checking on registering the car in georgia then selling it to me with a bill of sale so fla dmv can issue a new title. will let you know if it works.
As long as they are both 4 doors, that would work. But if you swap the 4 door VIN onto a 2 door, that would be very easy to prove wrong, because the body code will be wrong. For example, a 4 door's VIN would start out 1K92L100000, and a 2 door would be 1K91L100000.
well the georgia route is out. georgia won't accept s.c. cars with out titles and then title them. it can be registered in georgia but it can't get titled. this was verified thru the georgia dmv. so now i am going to calll this broadway title and see if they can help. if not the seller will be getting his car back.i am NOT going to swap vins. i know some do it but not me. my luck is not good enough. i would get caught. wish me luck
I guess it all depends on how good this car is? I hope it works out for you, you have a fair bit of time/money invested already. I know people that have run into this problem before, Ontario needs a title (we call it a Ownership) If you try to bring a car into Canada from the USA without one, your SOL!! No way, no how, unless it's 50% dismantled, then it's considered parts.
try : www.getnewtitle.com they say they can get any title all you need is a bill of sale a power of attorney and proof of insurance like for example a policy covering for fire only it will cost you $350.00 and will take up to 8 weeks often sooner!
If you never planned to sell the car I'd still do it. How many people other than maverick gurus would know this type of info? For example...my 77 F150 4x4...the frame is a 76 F100..the cab is a 77 F350 2wd. Although I have a title for both, it is registered using the F350 VIN and insured as a 77 F150 4x4. I also have a 69 F250 4x4 sitting on a 77 frame. Still regitered with the 69 F250 2wd VIN and insured as a 4x4. Been that way over 10 years now with no trouble.
The Maverick that we bought in Feb... Was Junk.. But we kept the title... Because it was clean and took out the Vin Plate so we can transfer it... Dont know how Legal it is.. But if we ever run into this problem we will swap it out
