Looks like a got a bad front seal on the C4. It shifted into gears, but when I shut the car off I noticed a steady stream of fluid coming from the bell housing area. Really frustrating since I just got everything running, kind of a setback really.

My question is, can the tranny be removed easily enough without removing the headers? I really don't want to go thru that hell again if I can avoid it.
I figure I'll get the transmission out and inspect it, buy a seal kit and new pan gasket and hope all is good. I don't think the TQ converter is cracked, but I'll have to give that a close look too.

May as well do a shift kit while it's out, then not have to deal with it again for a while.

Yeah maybe I can just loosen the passenger side, since it's the easier side to deal with.

Definitely gonna be messy, but hopefully worth it. I'm just mad that I have to do it at all.

not sure on pulling it, but I couldn't tighten down my headers until I had the trans fully installed b/c of interference.

It can be done but is real pia, got to turn it about 90 degrees and cuss then turn it 30 more degrees then rest your arms walk away from car cuss some more then swear you are never going to do this again, then crawl back under car into puddle of tranny fluid lay there for awhile and stare at everything under the car then get the idea to call a friend to help out, much easier with help, then you get tranny out and find out you just put too much fluid in it arrrgh. No I am not speaking from experience about too much fluid but know of others that did

You know Mike I'd hate to find out that it was just too much fluid, that would really PMO! LOL

From the indication on the dipstick it doesn't read full. But heck now you got me thinkin. Is there any other way to make sure I didn't overfill it besides the dipstick?

Also would it leak from the bellhousing from being overfilled?
How can I get all the fluid where it's supposed to be? Jack it up and let the wheels spin for a while?

When you install the new seal be sure to lubricate it (especially the sealing surface) so it doesn't burn the seal edge up before it can get enough oil to stay lubed.

One of the best investments I've made was a tranny jack from Harbor Freight. I think it was about $50 (on sale). Definitely makes it easier to take out and replace. It's not top quality but it'll do for a guy that only needs it once in a while.:)
