Hey guys, this isn't for my Mav, but for my g/f's mustang. She has a 66 with an I6 and a 3-speed manual. We're converting this to a C4 because she hates driving a stick. I'm doing the swap, but I'm not sure if I have the correct list of parts for the coversion. So far I have this: C4 tranny converter with ring gear flexplate for I6/C4 kickdown cable tranny cooler shifter Does anybody know if I need to swap driveshaft, starter, or any other parts I may be missing??? I know I should be on a mustang forum for this, but I trust everyone's knowledge on these message boards.
I believe the starter for an automatic is different from a stick starter(stick has shorter snout)Wont engage the ring gear properly and will grind. You need a starter for an auto trans.
You will want metal lines for the cooler - rubber holds the heat too much and it is much more expensive than the steel lines. For the short connections to the auxillary cooler make sure that you get Parker "Push-lock" hose or equivelant. It will withstand 250 PSI and the high temps of the transmission. Fuel line will not hold the pressure for very long - leaving you with a bad core and the need for a new transmission. You will need a 1/4" metal line from the intake to the transmission's vacuum modulator. If you try to use a long rubber hose it will collapse under the vacuum and leave you with shifting problems.
Okay, I'm ready to install the tranny, but I'm not sure how many quarts of oil go in? I believe it's five or so, but I may be wrong. Also, how many of those quarts do I put in the converter?
I always put a couple of quarts in the converter before installing it. Make sure you seat the converter correctly or you will burn up the trans. The whole job should take about 10 quarts.
I just know you have to slide it down the input shaft properly so it seats. Wiggle and slide it forwad at the same time. If it doesn't go in properly, you would know because it would be pinned up against the flexplate and you wouldn't be able to get the convert bolts in and may have a problem bolting the bellhousing to the block.
The converter will drop twice. Spin it in the trans till it clicks in, then spin it in one more time. When it clicks in the second time, it is seated.
Hey everyone, as I was trying to get the converter studs to line up with the holes on the flexplate and I noticed the center knob on the converter was not seating on the rear side of crankshaft. So I rolled the tranny back and noticed there was no opening for the "knob" of the converter to go. It appears to be a spacer of some sort--I'm not really sure. Any ideas on how to remove it. It's pressed in to the rear of the crankshaft. I installed the new flexplate and didn't even notice. Help please!!!
