Does the Heater/ AC Box have to be removed to access and replace the Fan Blower Motor. If yes, I presume this is major surgery like on the early Mustangs. Any suggestions or how to`s and what to beware of would be appreciated. (1971 Maverick - V8 with Air )

my son & i just replaced the heater core on a 1975 with a/c. we took the box out without the blower, but now that we have done it, it could all come out as one piece. its easier than the old mustangs because the bottom half of the dash uinbolts and comes out of the way. unbolt dash, remove air distribution box from bottom of box, disconnect cables and vac lines, take nuts off 3 bolts thru firewall, remove support brackets and ducts from blower, then pry box loose from firewall. after box is out then remove clips that hold 2 halves together (if replacing core). hope this helps.

picked it up on ebay last year for my son. has become the maverick from hell. have done many cars over the years, even built my own tube chassis car. have never had so many problems as with this thing. matches and a gallon of gas are sounding real good right now. oil leak in rear of engine, untraceable power drain when key off. you name it, its gone wrong.

On the a/c cars the blower motor detaches from the heater/evaporator core box without taking out the box. It's located in the center of the car on the driver's side of the box. Take off the floor distribution vent, and take off the air distribution box above the motor (one going to the vents in the center dash also with hoses hooked to go to the side vents). Look up into the motor housing from the bottom opening where the floor dist was attached, and there is a nut holding it to the heater box. Take this nut off, and because the hole it was in is slotted, turn it either back or forward (can't remember which right now) and it will dislodge it from the other three slot clips that hold it on. Then unplug it and pull it out. It sounds confusing, but once you get in there, what I said will make much more sense. Good luck!

Corbin - Since the heater was working fine before the blower motor stopped, I`ll try your instructions for the fan motor only replacement - that could save lots of time and grief - thanks for the info.

Try checking the fuse first. Also check all wire connections to the blower motor.

    fuse/wiring

Yeah, I was hoping that it was the fuse but it checks OK and wiring appears good also - I guess I should check for 12 volts at the motor before I begin surgery . Either way it involves a lot of standing on your head and working upside down - but - gotta have heat.

Here's a diagram that shows more of what I am talking about. Hope it helps - I know that I always get things done faster when I know what it looks like and how it's held together.

The first thing you should do is just take some jumper wires and hook upto a battery then to the blower if it works motor is not to blame. If that checks ok YOu have a power supply problem or a ground that needs fixed.

    Hey people,
While we are on the subject of heater boxes and such, does anyone know where I could pick up one that is in decent condition? I have a 74 four door w/AC.

By the way Corbin that pic that you posted do you have one for a 74 or do you think that it is nearly the same? From what I can see under my dash it looks very close.

I think it's exactly the same. If not, almost exactly. :D

    It's nearly the same.

I love exploded views. Problem is, they never show all the crap you have to go through to get to that assembly!
