I've done a few with fabric...one was like a woven burlap looked real nice..the other was covered with old fabric that was layin around just dyed it doesnt look to bad...and the fabric lets the sound from the speakers through too.

Mine had a crack in it when I got the car. Made a new one out of Masonite, and covered it with black carpet, the speakers are mounted under it. Nice and clean look.

Went to a fabric store this weekend and found some nice vinyl (it was actually marine grade) with a grain that looks similar to the inside rear quarter panels. I also bought some spray adhesive to hold it down. I'll give that a whirl some evening this week, I think it will look nice and should be durable. I'll post some pics when I get done...

try using that grip tape that you line your tool box with that stuff keeps everything from sliding around...ive used it for alot of custom things in my jeep....its funny when ppl compliment your ash tray (i had some fun with touch up paint super glue and the black grip stuff)

    Here are some "results" pics.

1.) The first one is the package tray (which I covered with vinyl) and new speaker covers.
2.) This is a pic of the speakers with brackets I made to mount in the rear deck.
3.) Pic of the speakers mounted.

I still have the interior tore apart, waiting for my replacement heater core housing from Craig. Hopefully next week I'll get things under way....

    That looks great! :thumbs2:
Question: Why did you go with the round speakers instead of 6x9s? Is it a matter of sound quality? looks?

The round speakers were already in the car when I got it, and unfortunately the holes were cut in the package tray. They (the speakers) were not mounted to the steel frame, and it was causing the tray to warp, and the speaker covers were deformed from heat. This "repair" is only a temporary fix, I found a couple of round speaker covers at a car show cheap, and the vinyl was less than $5 I think. Not sure how long these speakers will last, but when they no longer work, I'll put a pair of standard 6x9's in and purchase a new reproduction package tray already set up for speakers (with the small slots cut out). That will give the car a more "factory" appearance, which is what I'd be after anyway. For now, this cleans up the "mess" the former owner left me with. I'm also in the process of installing a "factory" AM/FM stereo radio, replacing the aftermarket one that was in the car..... Of course, that's when I discovered my broken heater core housing mess, but thanks to Craig having a replacement part, I'll get it fixed all back to together soon....

Cool. I wasn't picking at it because I think it looks good. I was just curious. My '73 has vinyl on it as well. I have also covered them with carpet. I like the factory look too (slots).
