Hello everyone, I was wondering what miles per gallon you get on your 302. My father, who has been wrenching for 13 years, told me I could expect 4-5 MPG with a 302 . Please include what you've done to the engine or what parts you added. I don't need a exact number, just a estimate.
lol, ya you would get that if you floor it every wear. im geting around 12mpg. mostly because i have 3.50 gears in the diff and the motor is spinning up around 3000 rpm on the freeway. if i was down around 2000 rpm im shure i would get 3 to 5 more mpg than i do now. the motor is a 302 with domed pistons makeing the compression ratio around 11 to 1. the heads are ported stock big chamber heads. i have the ford f 303 cam.
When I had a 3:00 highway gear in my Comet, with a mildly built up 351W, (600 Holley, cam, headers) I would get 17 mpg at 70 mph and 15 mpg at 80. The original stock 302 with the same Holley carb and an aluminum intake got 20 mpg on the highway. Figure about 2/3rd of those numbers for city driving. As long as you keep the revs down and don't go crazy with too big a carb or cam, it ought to be pretty reasonable. Consider an overdrive tranny, too.
I got 14.6 MPG on an interstate trip averaging 65 mph with a 9.2 to1 compression 308 with Victor jr. heads FMS X-303 cam, Offy Tunnel ram with 2 Holley 450` carbs ,a 3,800 rpm stall converter and 4.11 gears.
On my freshly rebuilt 302, 20 over, everything stock except flat top pistons, in 3500 miles of driving since rebuild the MPG range is 12.5 to 15.5. This is @ 65 on the freeway. I have kept records and receipts of all milage and gas. I drive the same round trip distance each day 93 miles. I go to the gas station each day, visit the same pump, and let it click off 3 times. Does not seem to vary much if I pu**y foot the gas or drive normally. I am interested in seeing documented proof of anyone getting 20 mpg with a stock 302 and stock gears in a 76 four door.... The day I got 15.5 mpg there was minimal traffic (not much braking)....
I get 24 on an all highway trip with mine. 302 TFS heads, trickflow stage 1 cam ,650cfm holley. The key is a T5 5speed with 3:50 gears. I love me some overdrive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Before I tore mine down I was getting 15-16mpg with the stock 302 with a single plane aluminum manifold and a holley 650. This was a 4 speed car with the stock 2.73 gears.
I got just at 20 mpg on my stock 302, single-plane intake, Edel 600 carb, GT40P heads, slightly larger than stock cam, and 3.80 gears with 27" tires. I could also get 1 gallon to the mile, if I put my foot into it, but highway and "normal" driving, I could squeeze 20.
I know good gas milage is doable with our cars, and from what I've been reading is that alot of the cars that are gettig the good milage are roller cam motors. Is anyone seeing good numbers with a flat tappet cam? Has anyone had both flat and roller and documented the diff. It may be a weird question, but with the way gas is going up it could well be worth the extra little bit of money to go with a roller cam motor. IMO.
I got 22 mpg on highway trip with my 65 fastback running and otherwise stock 289 with edelbrock 4v intake, Holley 600, c4, and stock 3.00 gearing. That was averaging a speed of about 70mph. Around town in stop and go, I got between 15-18 mpg. - Matt
I get an average of 21 with a stock engine and two barrel. More on the highway slightly less in the city.
