Sand the chrome with 220 grit,Apply a good etching primer(Vari-prime is a good one)Then use a good 2 part primer surfacer.Block sand/wet sand untill you have a smooth surface, perhaps prime some more if necessary.Repeat sanding steps, finish up with 400/600 grit wet then clean/dry and paint whatever color you want. The key is scuffing the chrome well so paint will stick to it.The only thing that naturally sticks to chrome with out coming off is bug guts...good luck.

John - is this for those really nice chrome bumpers on the car in your avitar? If so, you may want to grease them up and store them for future use and go with a set of fiberglass ones. The run about $125 bucks each and are quite easy to paint.

This way - you could go back to chrome someday if you wanted.

You could just sand em and spray bomb them, but you will be doing it once a year at least.

I guess the fiberglass bumpers are the way to go. They're lighter and cheaper.

That is one of Ray's (Razorsharp) cars (prior to Katrina) in the avatar.

I had my bumpers sand blasted prior to priming and painting.

    (y) - I thought it looked familiar

Sandblasting seems like a good way to go. Adhesion of the new paint is critical to prevent stone and bug damage.

Or ya take them to a chrome shop and they can dip them and remove the chrome leaving bare steel.

Poor thing...still sitting in the back yard. Not sure if or when I'll be able to do anything with that one. Too many projects.

If it'll take the chrome off like that, keep your fingers out of it! :D

I've been contemplating this myself, still not sure whether I should paint them or rechrome them.

Whichever is the cheapest route I guess would be the best, mine have surface rust spots that need to be dealt with first.
