    1977 Maverick Questions Thread

Figured Ill be having quite a few questions, so if its alright with you guys Ill compile them all into one thread so I dont clutter up the forum. :)

A couple of odds and ends questions, any help would be greatly appreciated:

1.The front bumper has been hit from the side and now it has shifted completely over to the driver side(was like that when I bought it)...are there adjustment bolts behind it to easily realign it? I know the frame isnt bent.

2.The car has a manual choke and its hard to start because of it(the cable was rigged by the last owner), is there anyway to convert it to an electric choke?

3.For the first minute or so after starting the car will bog down and shut off if any gas is applied to it whatsoever, can anyone help?

I dont know much about older cars, I can fix whats broken, but I have no idea how to troubleshoot/convert some things.

You probably have a problem with junk in the tank. You will need to drop the tank (after emptying it) and clean it. After you clean the tank you can coat the inside with one of several products that prevent rust and seal it. Then you can install a new filter sock on the pickup and put it back in. Before you connect that hose be sure to flush it and replace all the filters.

the bumper has a mount on each side that bolts to the frame with two rather large bolts on each side. theyre a pita to get broken loose. between the bumper and the body there is a shock absorber on each side of the bumper. the one may be damaged or compressed and between the shock and the bumper there are 4 bolts holding the 2 together. theyre usually rusted solid but if you can get them loose it should also allow for adjustment.

getting up under there and taking a few pics would help us get you going in the right direction as well.

your car should have had an electric choke to start with so it probably wouldnt be too hard to put back. personally i'd just work out the bugs with the manual cabel you already have. might be simpler

checking the timing and makeing a few adjustments to the carb would probably help with your bog issue too

Replace the points with a good electronic ignition and hotter coil, and chances are you won't even need a choke.

Had the same problem, no choke housing whatsoever, just ripped away all the "manual" stuff that someone before me had put there (cable, bracket and spring that could be seen mounted near where the choke house was supposed to be), put on a new choke housing (electrical or not) and there it is original again!

    Good luck!!!

I think it is also, if I have to redo all of that I might as well go ahead and convert it.

How hard is it to convert the rear also? Im assuming the car wouldnt look right with a large bumper on the back and a small one on the front.

it probably wouldnt wouldnt be that noticable actually. was was riding around with a small bumper in the back and the big still in the front for a while. you have to drill a few holes but you can be done in an afternoon. finding all the stuff was the hard part. wasnt cheap either

for the front you need the bumper, brackets, valence

for the rear you need the bumper, brackets, valence and rear 1/4 panel extensions

Naw, missed that part. It needs a tune up & possibly carb work then.

Looks like A/C stuff. The top I think is the thermostat for the A/C, to cycle the compressor. Cracked dash? Vinyl repair kit ?

    Thanks for the help:)

Ive never messed with a vinyl repair kit before so I dont know what it will fix(besides vinyl), so thats what I can use to fix it?

Also, whats the best way to paint kickpanels and the other high-traffic plastic pieces? Im going with a black interior.

The parts houses usually stock a vinyl interior paint. As for that dash crack........... I'm not saying a vinyl kit will fix it, just might be worth a try. That's a bad crack.
