Hello Fellas, Got a few rust holes in my car im trying to fic b4 i go into the patching(bondo) process.....Just wanted a few pointers on what of some ways would be used to keep from patching it back w/o having re-rust at the same spot down the road Hole is the size of a quarter and its in the driver side rear window pillar
Cut it all out, weld in a chunk to replace it if you can. Otherwise... I don't want to tell you to fill it with a chunk of Bondo... I have been buying "new" fenders and doors to keep from having to do either (i cant find a smilie to fit here appropriately...something between Huh and Cool)
Cut it out and weld in a patch. Thats the only right way to do it. I have been helping another member here (hawkco) with his car. What originally appeared to be less then an inch hole ended up haveing the entire lower quarter replaced. You never know.
All good answers. The only sure-fire way to repair rust holes is to cut out the rusted areas and weld in new metal. Filling rust holes with bondo is only a temporary fix. In time it will bubble out and the rust hole will reappear, in many cases bigger than ever. As Jamie stated, a small rust hole can actually turn into a large rust hole once you hit it with a grinder.
Thanks a lot.....The existing bondo i have applied before is starting to show through the primer....not a good thing....but i will make an attempt to re fix the hole once again with your alls technique....Thanks to all for the responces
Since a car is painted on the outside, usually all rust bubbles or holes you see started from the other side of the metal which is usually untreated or poorly treated. If I had a 1/2 rust hole, I would probably go out at least a couple of inchs in all directions from it, unless you can see the backside to see how far it has spread.
regarding rust repair. I have been restoring old fords have special experience with old mustangs for many years. I have recently picked up a 1972 maverich with a 302 engine the car is almost rust free but does need some interior work to be perfect Anyways, as a professional restorer I would recommend removing the old rusted sections and replace with a new steel patch. Also, around the repair area use a rust killer which soaks deep into the metal and removes all trace amounts of rust, this way it will NEVER come back. The best product I have found is called deoxydoesit there is a site called deoxydoesit.com that will give you more info and details, this stuff is also great for soaking rusted parts, they come out looking perfectly new! Once your patch is welded, ground and treated with deoxydoesit, you can then finish with body filler, prime and paint for a lasting repair, that will keep you maverick looking great for many years to come! Since it's old I won't feel bad about hijacking it. For small parts I use a 5 gallon bucket, water, washing soda, rebar and a battery charger. It will make this rusty part look like this. For the procedure see http://1bad6t.com/rust_removal.html
