Flat black

For those concours guys! just how flat should the rear tail panel be to be correct? Its going flat black....my painter said he can do different percentages of flat! id like to get it close to original as possible....usually the flat blacks on original cars are usually completly weathered down, i dont think ive ever seen an original flat black still on the tail panel.....so gimme ur thoughts what it looked like back in 71 thanks!:bananaman

 

Ford called it "semi-flat" IIRC.
It is not a true flat black.

 

Well hmmmmm...from some of the guys on here ive been told there was no semi about it....it was Flat?

 

Nope. It wasn't flat black.
My 72 Grabber wasn't flat black.
It's the same as they used on the grilles.
Pretty sure the term was "semi-flat".

Btw, have you seen "flat black"?
If so, you would know right away there is no comparison.
Your painter was absolutely correct to ask you what he did.

 

I bought some paint from my Dupont jobber about 4-5 years ago and painted my rear louvers. It is a semi-gloss or semi-flat as you may wanna call it. It is simply called Hot-Rod black and it comes premixed in a quart can. If I were going to paint a tail panel or hood stripe this is what I would be using. It has held up on my louvers great and it cleans very easily. Who knows the "exact" shade..or flatness on these cars? Not me, nor do I care...not does it really matter. All I know is how easy it was to use and how smooth/satiny it looks after it dries. If your going for concours how you gonna duplicate the texture in the tail panel black.

 

i'd imagine theres probably a resto company selling the correct black for mustang tail panels of the day. i'll bet the maverick color was probably exactly the same. if not there is probably some concorse mustang info on the web that'll help you out

 

Wouldn't true "flat" would absorb stains and be hard to clean?

 

Be careful with the "Hot Rod Black" because the black primer is called Hot Rod black, and it compares nothing to the semi gloss/flat paint... Its FLAT. lol

 

I deffintly am not gonna be able to be able to duplicate the "texture" i think im just gonna go with a very very flat black....i tend to like that better on tail lights!!

 

The Hot Rod Black in my link is definitely not a primer but I do know what you're talking about. This stuff really is nice....and easy to use.

If you go to Oreillys/Napa/Autozone/etc and you go in and ask for hot rod black your gonna get that most likely. lol

My Grabber must have been a one off. It often doesn't match anyone's descriptions of a Grabber.

 

I agree. The black used on hood blackouts, grilles, tail panel blackouts, spoilers, engine bays, etc... was all the same stuff.

I also agree with Ray... doesn't matter much.
Flat black looks washed out and faded. Also permanently holds stains and is damaged by wax.
Gloss black is wrong.
So just get a good semi and be happy.

 

So what about the black used on 73-74 Grabbers on the sides, was it semi flat or gloss? And if it was gloss, were the tail panels painted with gloss to match, or were they all semi flat black?
