A trans brake works by locking the trans in first and reverse at the same time, causing it to basically be in park while the button is held. Upon releasing the button it goes into the low gear. This way its like a linelock so you cant go forward or backwards but you can build up RPM and be in its optimum power range when it launches.
I didn't think it was good to run a trans brake on the street? All of them I ever saw advertised said "Not for street use"
It's probably not the best thing to use on the street, but it all depends on how hard you bang on it. Just like dumping a clutch or neutral dropping it, neither are the best thing to do.
It doesn't do anything unless you push in the button. Definitely helps on the launch in a race car. So far I've always been a footbraker. However it is legal in my sportsman class here in Division 7. It is harder on parts in the tranny though.
