This question isn't asked without careful reading and searching the forum...maybe that's why I don't know the answer....

    • In general, or for '72 160 in particular, does the 3spd transmission from a I6 car bolt to a 302?
The 302 in my conversion is from a 91 grand marquis. In know the c4 has a removable bell housing, thus my inquiry
    Thanks!

the c4 from a 250 I6 will bolt right up to a 302 but the smaller I6's (170-200ci)have diffrent bells which will have to be changed out for a small block v8 bell housing

Oh I see. So is the bell housing on the 3 spd removable as well? I have a 3 spd connected to a 170ci and I'm putting a 302 in the car. Will I have to get a whole new transmission or is the bell housing on the 3 spd toploader removable?

ya, im 99.99% sure you can just swap on the bell housing you need, but whatevers on there now will not work with a 302

Tony, thanks for all your insight. here's a $2 question (my wallet hopes I'm right)...I wonder if a C4 bell housing from a 250ci mav will bolt onto my 3pd toploader? I am trying to wait for a friend's T5 but I can only wait for so long!!!

Nope! the C4 bell will only fit a C4. The standard transmissions need a different bellhousing.

    yea, pual's right

the bell housing from a c4 that was bolted up to a 250 will bolt onto a 302 however. so if you know someone trying to hook a c4 to a 302 they'll be able to use that bell. definatly not something to go in the scrap pile...

    Thanks, yall!
Yea, I am actually trying to buy a T5 out my friend's mustang and he wants the c4 because of the removable bell housing. Only thing I don't have is a crossmember for T5 but I read somewhere on here that they are easy to make.
