Well, I've got the impetus to make my own custom grille. I might have decided on the material. I'm thinking "12 in. x 48 in. Hexagon Mesh" I know I'll have to make my own "tabs" like our stock grilles have, but that's fairly simple. I'm going to put a metal trim line around the edges to finish it off. I'm debating whether to use the "maverick" emblem in the grille or not. I'm looking to have the only visible exterior badges be small steer skulls. Anyway, the only thing I have to decide is whether i want it chrome or powder coat black. I'm partial to black, but I'm going to order a sample so I can decide. So any opinions?
I forgot- does anyone know the angle the bend is at in the middle? I'd rather not monkey around on the bending brake with stuff I paid $ for. I would look for my own self, but it's 12:52 AM here.
I been toying around with a couple of prototypes and I have something coming soon myself. That bend in the middle is tricky cause it is also at an angle making my billit style to move to a different idea. My idea is too hot for you to handle and too cold for me to tell lol, j/k...
I've played around with doing something like that to a Comet grill but the wire mesh I bought turned out to be too thick to work with. Where did you find that stuff?
It's a compound angle if I am thinking clearly, not only does it bend left to right, but it tapers down as well, I don't know how you would set it up to get the "right" shape, although, might not even need the taper
if you are making a "custom grille", why would you care about the shape of the "old" stock one? ......
It seems to me that no taller than the factory grille is that if you use the mesh grille you may be able to tweak the downward angle into it after you make the first bend. I too have messed with this type of material before and I'm sure I could have shaped mine as needed. I guess it depends on how stiff the mesh is. I think I would like to see one made up though, in chrome and black.
LOL I have a handmade "custom" grill! Mine is awesomely made from white wire shelving and the mesh that goes behind stucco on houses. I bent it to match the Comets angles with a pair of pliers. Again, the only word to describe it is awesome, right?
I made a set of grilles for the nostrils on my z28 with that stuff. Was very cheap in price from Home Depot. It was in 8"x4' strips, called 'gutter gaurd'. Keeps leafs out of your rain gutters. They were in a pile on the shelf at the store. I had to dig through them and cherry-pick one that hadn't been bent up and damaged from careless handling.
it's at customcargrills.com. I think I'll get the sample pack before I go with the one I want right now.
