    i went to Barnes&Nobles today to pick up a book about car modifications, and while there i read a book about the worst cars ever made and the maverick was in the book.:mad: this made me pretty mad:mad:

    it was written by craig cheetham

    has anyone else seen this book?

    Well... anyone can write fluff and get it published if they have money, or spend someone else's... but it doesn't mean they know what they're talking about.

    From what I could read in the article: Prone to rust? Failure due to metal fatigue? Gutless and fragile six cylinders?

    Compared to WHAT?

    I recall seeing the numbers dwindle on the first generation Honda Civics where the body literally rusted apart and the engines needed to be rebuilt every couple years. How many of THOSE are still around? How about the first generation of any other make of foreign car... THOSE are usually crap for a couple years. Apparently, new German cars are crap too. Really expensive crap.

    GM is loved by many... but the two Buick GS's I had 20 years ago had more rust in the floorboards and trunk THEN than my Comet's do NOW.
    Everyone I know with an import or newer "economy car" that's over 10 years old has suffered with warped heads, cracks in the cooling system, CV joints and suspension components that break like toothpicks if you take too many sharp corners, and cooked clutches, and the dreaded blown transmission if you don't put expensive synthetic fluid in at least once a year (at 80.00 a flush).

    I'd like to know what the author's idea of a "good" economy car is.:bs:

    the inline six 200 is bullet proof and there is the factory 302 option but i sure love my "desperatly ugly from every angle" car! and some friendly advice whisky, NEVER FLUSH YOUR TRANSMISSION! just service it (gasket, filter, fluid, and clean pan)

    Many people are quick to bad mouth the american car companies quility issues but they don't say much about foreign car defects. A friend of mine had a Datsun pickup that was a nice looking truck but in less then three years, it was completely rusted out. All the companies have made mistakes and most have been corrected. I don't think anyone has the perfect car. Neglect has a lot to do with it.

    I wouldn't worry about it. The Pinto, Mustang II and Maverick, when introduced to the public were the best selling car in their time:thumbs2:. At least the first year. It took him 30 years to write that book, just wait for Volume 2.

    On this point I totally disagree.:disagree: In my experiance those old 6 cylinder engines were as tough as nails. I have never heard of a properly maintained Ford 6 cylinder grenading. The key words here being Proper Maintance. No engine will last if it is not serviced regularly, but even so the Ford 6 cylinders were pretty forgiving. The last Mustang I owned had a 200 under the hood, and it was nearing the 3000,000 mile mark. Yes, that engine was very tired, but it never quit. Two of the Mavericks I have owned had 250's, and they both were strong, great running engines. As far as them being "Gutless", the 6 cylinders were designed to be fuel efficient, economy engines that still had plenty of pep. If the writer thought a 6 cylinder could launch out of the hole and hit 60 in under 5 seconds he clearly had his head up his a**. While he is entitled to his opinion, the writer really did not seem to know the Mavericks very well. Sure, the Mavericks were prone to rust. So were nearly all of the cars built in the 1970's. I honestly think the Mustang was just as bad if not worse than the Maverick when it came to rust problems. Why do you think us autobody folks refer to Mustangs as " Rustangs "?

    gutless?Well,they sure ain't no powerhouses,fragile?-hardly.The Ford inlines are as durable as anything the Japs have produced.Rust prone?Yea,but so was just about anything built back then.Ugly from any angle?Just an opinion,and everyones got one.

    I use to have a 71 chevy pickup, good running truck got rid of it because it failed inspection due to the lack of metal left on the truck..It doubled as the flintstone mobile:thumbs2:

    I had a 66 Belvedere wagon that was chopped into a Ranchero style thing and it was dead reliable and easy driving. It was more welds and rust than sheetmetal though. Traded it for $50 and a bb gun.

    Yea, I call B.S. :disagree: on the fragile part. I owned a 200-6 3 on the floor car in high school and REALLY drove it hard ALL the time thinking that if I could just blow the motor I`d have a "Reason" for my dad to let me put a 302 v8 in it. That little motor simply would NOT blow up!:banghead:
