Spotted this Maverick driving down Lawrenceville-Suwanee Rd. today. I was sitting at a red light at an intersection and it went through the intersection. As soon as the light turned green, I immediately gave pursuit of the car, hoping that it hadn't turned off somewhere. I caught up with it a couple of miles down the road. Big bumper car, lightish brown color, with hubcaps. This car is almost an identical twin of Jeff's (Rthomas771) car, same hubcaps and everything. Only way I knew that it wasn't his, is it had the smooth bumpers without the black strips. I followed the car for a couple of miles, two people were in it. It made a right turn onto McKendree Church Rd., and then turned off into a neighborhood. The guy driving stuck his hand out the window and waved as they turned off. Looked like a really nice car. I managed to snap the picture below of it with my cell phone, didn't turn out to clear. I've seen probably a dozen Mavericks and Comets randomly on the road like that, but this was only the second time I was actually driving my Maverick at the time of the sighting.
Other than at car shows, I bet I have only spoted a half a dozen or so Mavericks, in the wild, in the last 10 years. You start to get the feeling that there are a lot of us Maverick/Comet owners out there but actually there are only a lot of Maverick/Comet owners "HERE" on the web site. Spread us around the country and we might not be spotted for years.
I just got back from Hawaii and saw a 73 4 door Comet and a 73 4 door Maverick within 2 miles of each other, that was the last thing I thought I would see there. Both were in good condition as far as I could tell from driving by them.
Mavericks are still out there. Frank and I saw a 4-door a couple weeks ago at CVS in Jackson. Me and Jimmy seen 2 of them in Porterdale in one day.
Don't snow when it's 60 degrees outside. It did rain on and off for most of the day though. Pretty much ruined the plans I had of testing out my new sawzall cutting some Mavericks up.
I've seen four Comets in Memphis. Two green ones, both small bumper. A 4 door in great original shape at a Bartlett McDonald's, and a 2 door driving down Walnut Grove. Plus Streetrod77's Comet, and one at Pull-A-Part. The only Maverick I've seen was also at Pull-A-Part, but it no longer exists.
Up here in Toronto i usually only see a Maverick or a Comet around only if i bring my Comet to a car show and there is another one there or if the Daydreamer puts on his NMCC meet and greets or a mini meet. And i almost never have a camera with me.
I've yet to see another Maverick/Comet in the Salt Lake City/Ogden, Utah area in years. I've had people follow me to gas stations and grocery stores and say is, is, is that a Maverick? Or that's nice years ago I had a Maverick, or the semi-derogatory (In my opinion at least.) It's a Maverick after following me because they liked the throaty sound of a good 302, I think he was a Chevy man. One guy I told me he still has Maverick body minus the the 427 engine in his garage that he used to race at Bonneville Raceway, If he or I had more time I'd asked to see it and if he was the guy I'd run into now and then back in the day on the Blvd when I had my 72 Comet GT. One junkyard's told me he has about 4 maverick/comets on hand I'm thinking of checking it out this Friday for parts I need the Maverick grill emblem and Maverick gas cap.
Mavericks were everywhere around here a not so long ago. We had a local guy that rebuilt wrecked Mavericks and Comets and he sold every one he fixed so they plentyful. Seems everyone had one at one time or another. After buying my car in Aug. I have realized they are not only seldom seen on the road but all the ones I spotted sitting around have vanished too. It is ironic that Fords bread and butter car would become a rare sight. I guess that makes the ones we save that much more special and desireable in the coming years. The best place to see them around here is at the Somernites Cruise there are usually 3 or 4 there.
accept for the June show.....I think this year we had 7 and the year before that was 10 (maybe) I plan on being there in June as well as I few others from out of state.
