AODs are a valid choice for those who are running 3.70 and deeper rear ends because of their performance engines when they drive them on the street as well as the 1/4 mile. They can be made to take a lot of HP as long as it is engine only. The same clutch drums that need to be installed (steel drums) to make the AOD strongest do not respond to nitrous at all well. (they twist) AS long as they are built properly and/or used appropriately they are great transmissions.
http://www.transmissioncenter.org/ http://www.baumannengineering.com/aodeupgr.htm I found these websites very informative regarding all of the different versions(and there are many) of the AOD. The articles adressed the strengths and weak points of the AOD. For the money.... I think a gear vendor brand under / overdrive would do more. What do you think of these articles, Paul?
I would suggest either Broader Performance or Lentech for your AOD needs. they both make AODs that can handle up to 1000 NA HP! Broader is the guy that would build my transmissions if I wasn't doing it myself. But if you live in Western Washington then drop me a line and I will talk to you about your needs and build one to fit! (or tell you to go to Broader Performance if I can't do what needs to be done.)
.......from the title of his thread..."C4 to AOD swap on a 250 cid engine. Help"....i think the... AOD...can handle it. i have sold about 25 of my crossmembers on this board alone. one i know of is going behind a (built) 250. the rest are 302s.there are some that built their on crossmembers...so that makes ... 1-said it won't work. 1-said he thought he read where it...won't work. 25+ are installing them and/or driving them. Frank, If I build them I have to believe in them.... I have always said they were a decent transmission - they are just expensive to build to take the 600 HP that an $800 C4 can take. The AOD built to yake that kind of HP will cost two to three times as much. But then the AOD does start out with roller thrust bearings and you have to add those to the C4 at 600+ HP. But then you have to use the AODE and 4R70W parts to make it take the 2" band (OD) and large clutch packs that fit the steel drums,,, etc. It is like rebuilding a transmission using the hard parts (shafts and clutches etc.) in the AOD case. It can get very expensive fast. I love the guys that bring both transmissions and want an AOD that will handle 500+ HP. It makes my job a lot easier and the cost much lower.
i think all your...high HP talk is misleading him....he is talking about putting it behind a 250.. tell him what mods he will have in an AOD for a...C4 to AOD swap on a 250 cid engine...not some 600-800 HP motor. ......
Any AOD, in stock form, from any 5.0L should be strong enough for long life behind a stock 250 six cylinder. You will have to get a Lokar throttle pressure cable or equivalent and depending on the donor AOD you might have to shorten your drive line. Cross member can be purchased here or you could try to make your own. Use a rubber transmission mount (not the poly ones) You will need a zero balance flexplate that will fit the AOD converter or buy a special converter with 10 1/2" bolt pattern to fit your existing flex plate.
