I'm in over my head and punching above my weight, so if anyone can help me it would be great. I thinking about a v8 conversion i have the possibility on an engine and box but will a C6 transmission fit my 70 maverick? Or am I being stupid. thanks
The c-4 will fit a lot easier. The 70's tranny tunnel is a bit narrower that year. Also the c-4 takes less HP to run.
I'll be running it with a 351. And the big thing is I'm getting it for free! what would i have to do to fit it? And is it possible
At minimum you will have to fab up a custom crossmember and will have to shorten the driveshaft. These mods would be needed on any Maverick. The 70 has a smaller trans tunnel, so even if the C6 fits later Mavs, it likely won't fit the 70 without customizing the floor pan.
Sorta on topic...what is the advantage or difference in running C6 and C4? All I hear is C6 is heavier, bigger, and parasites off more HP. What else? Still a 3 speed, right? So what is the difference?
It is bigger - everywhere than the C4. In stock form it can easily take 450-500 HP. The gear ratios are the same. It doesn't fit in many of the smaller Fords of the era.
C-4's don't handle torque like a C-6 does. Nor do they like to be neglected over the years. With a C-4 , you "use it or lose it". But in also using it, it's life span is also shorter than a C-6. Sure the C-6 uses more power, but once it's in there, you can forget about it.
Devil's advocate here...but wouldn't a decently built C4 outlast a C6? But, I guess you can build a C6 decently, but with our smallblocks, it seems that a lighter stronger built C4 would still beat out a C6 after calculating weight and size... Unless I am missing something.
No. I've had two vehicles with C-4's. Both have had numerous rebuilds. I've had two other vehicles with C-6's. Neither ever had to be rebuilt. One was 38 years old without a rebuild.
Is the C6 a newer model, or just the "truck" model of the same years? I mean were the 4 and 6 made at the same time and the 6 got put behind bigger cars and trucks while the 4 got put in the smaller ones, or was the C4 THE transmission for certain years and then the C6 came along to replace it... Sorry so many questions. I just never before got an opportunity to learn this stuff.
