I am seriously considering doing my own C4 rebuild, I have done several engines but never had the intestinal fortitude to tackle a tranny. I researched the net for REMANS, much too pricey for my allowance. My question is; Do I need to purchase special tools for this project and at what possible cost? **************************** IF IT'S GOT BOOBS OR WHEELS IT'S GONNA COST YA!
I have overhauled with only regular hand tools, But to do the job rite and set all clearances and torque specs rite you need at minimum, A spring compressor, A inch pound torque wrench and a assortment of snap rings and wire feeler gauges. To do a high performance rebuild you will also need a lathe and surface grinder a drill press and vice, a hand drill, and some good bits, And a dial caliper. You will also need the correct literature, Most books give just the minimum and maximum settings for clearances and don't give the little tricks of the trade so to speak.Pauls has some good info under the technical thread you might want to check out. But yes a C-4 can be overhauled with just basic hand tools.
If you just want a rebuilt C4 then you will need a makeshift spring compressor (a couple of metal bars the right size and a section of threaded rod), a set of feeler gauges, a master overhaul kit, front band, rear servo piston/seal assembly, a green stripe vacuum modulator and replacement thrust washers for #1 - #2 - and #9. A tube of Loc-tite 518. The #1 and #2 thrust washers are select fit and should be replaced with the same size as in the case. The #9 thrust washer is a standard size and needs to be replaced because it takes the entire thrust load under acceleration. I am happy to assist if you decide to do the build yourself. You are too far away for me to build one for you and I don't do "normal" rebuilds anyway. With the Haynes TechBook on Ford automatics you have enough information to rebuild a C4. There is also a great video by "Bad Shoe" productions on rebuilding a C4. Using those two tools it should be fairly easy to get a good rebuild even if you have never touched an automatic before. If you buy your parts through Broader Performance you will have access to their tech line - another invaluable tool. Good luck with the rebuild!
i rebuilt a c6 and a 4spd top loader in my basement back in the 80's. i have a FMX down there right now i am going to rebuild. i just cant get myself down there to do it! get your self a good repair book, take your time. i cleaned every single part with gunk and a toothbrush in the wash basin. make plenty of room and lay everything out just like it came out. you will need internal and external snapring pliers. good luck
Thanks Thank you all very much, you make it sound like a walk in the park but I'll probably be back for more advice. ************************************* IF IT'S GOT BOOBS OR WHEELS IT'S GONNA COST YA!
