I think the black on the bezels is standard for all Mavs and Comets...I think.

The color on the bezel matched the grill

Now that you mention it I have seen black and a charcoal like color, but that's it. :scratchchin:

Grabbers and Sprints and Comet GTs had black grills and black trim around the headlight door. The Stallions had black grill and blacked out doors. All others were argent.

Until '76-'77 - when the grills went black with a divider bar.

    There were several Maverick grills
'70-'72 argent grill with center medallian
'70 black grill with center medallian - used on '70 Grabber and '72 Sprint
'71-'72 black Grabber grill with clear driving lights
'72 chrome faced LDO grill with clear driving lights
'73-'75 argent grill with orange turn indicators
'73-'75 black grabber grill with orange turn indicators (chrome bezels around the indicators)
'73-'75 chrome faced LDO grill (did this go all the way to '75?)
'76 black Stallion grill with black indicator bezels and divider bar
'76-'77 standard black grill with argent indicator bezels and divider bar

The headlight bezels matched the grill.
I don't know the minor changes of the Comet grills as well.

This is everything I can think of, please add or correct anything I'm missing.

My 75 was stock with black grille and bezel trim.
I knew the part about bezels matching grille color, but never really thought about why my 75 had it, even though it is not a Grabber.

It must have been available with a black grille in 75 as an appearance package related to the Halo roof... ??? Maybe the sport mirrors? The 75 has those too.

    Any insight?

    Edit:
The turn signals are 'clear' with black bezels.

Lots of Mavs without black headlamp surrounds and grill.

I can't answer this. Maybe it was an option or came with certain combinations of options, like you mention above. I'm glad you mentioned that it had clear turn signal lenses. I seem to remember somthing about '74 having orange lenses and '75 having no color (not clear like Grabber lights, but a lense with no color). I think I'll post a new thread about this and see if we can get it cleared up.
