Guys my starter was giving me problems on my 71 Grabber. I crawled underneath to remove & did not think I would get it out without removing headers. I got it out but it was a chore. A buddy of mine said I should go with a late model Mustang starter. He said they were much smaller & had much more torque than mine. Long story short I went to Oreilly's & bought part # 32281. I installed very easily in the limited space & turns the motor over much faster. Just thought I would share. This may be a common swap but it was new to me.
I didnt know but I will be having to replace my starter here soon, starting to go bad...thanks for the valuable info. Is there any trick you can share on the easiest way to remove the big starter? You said it was a chore, figured you could offer some tips, or is it pretty straight forward?
Do you have headers? If not it should be a lot easier With headers you just have to learn to be patient and learn to wiggle alot lol
Nah, no headers...now that I think about I have an inline 6...so I doubt I'll have a problem anyways...
agree....I run a POWERMASTER on mine, great little starters. But regardless of the brand, mini's are a nice upgrade!
I am assuming that the gear on a fox body starter has the same teeth on it, and is a direct bolt in with our flywheel ?....
Yes direct bolt on. ford ranger starters will work also, but you have to do some wiring, that I don't recall how to do. It has to due w/ the starter having a solenoid built in already.
Thanks for correcting me. It's been a while since I messed with them. IIRC you can buy aftermarket mini starters w/o the solenoid. I may be wrong again... its early in the morning, im tired from working all nite, so i tend to forget things. lol ...FFA...
mine was making a noise...i pulled it this morning and took it by the shop. the guy said it was the gears, that they didn't lube them when it was built....he lubed them up and it sounds like a new starter... my starter has a BOSH sticker on it...be that good/bad... ...
