Is it safe to turn a C4 or ANY tranny for that matter, upside down (pan facing up)? I don't have a stand for it, and I want to take the pan off and check it out.

you'll probably dent or at least scratch the roof if you do that. I'd leave it right side up.

No problem... Just drain it first, and expect some fluid to pour out of the "puke hole" in the top.

It won't hurt the transmission, and as long as you leave the filter attached to the valve body you can pull the pan and the valve body without a chance of losing any parts.
I don't know what you expect to see....
It is all assembled into t tight, overlapping, jumble of shells, bands, and drums. To inspect anything you will need to disassemble the C4 down to its most basic components. You can check the end play with the valve body off but all that will tell you is whether the wear on the thrust washers is within tolerance or not. The biggest failure items are the rear servo piston seal assembly, Direct clutches and apply piston seals, the forward clutches and apply piston seals, the thrust washers, bushings and pump gears and body.
None of those things - with the exception of the rear servo parts - can be inspected without complete disassembly.

I just wanted to see if there was any crap in the pan. The last one I looked at had a bunch of what looked like coffee grounds in it. This one seemed good though. Thanks for all your help guys.

If your checking for junk in the trunk (pan) I would leave pan down so it don't into tranny. After you take pan an fluid off an out, then you can spin her!

    ???!
Don't try to spin the transmission without fluid in it.
Clean the pan - look at the filter, if it doesn't have junk plugging it then put the pan back on, adjust the bands, put 4 quarts of the proper fluid in it and start the engine and let it idle in Park while you fill it to half way between the FULL and ADD mark on the stick. Then shift it through the gears a few times being sure the wheels are stopped before you put it back in Park. With the engine still idling, check the oil level again and fill to between the FULL and ADD marks on the stick.
Let it down off the stands and take it for a test drive. When you get back from your test drive check the oil level again (idling in Park) and make sure it is not over the FULL mark or below the ADD mark. Adjust it as necessary.
