+1 for bad cap. The only time mine ever came off was going down the interstate at 70mph with no windows in the car. Fortunately it caught on the a-pillar and didn't blow out of the car. Ever since I put dem winders in, it's stuck like glue, but with no glue.
I don't know John...ya gotta realize we are talking about Gene's car...and it's a Comet on top of that!!!
No, we're discussing caps. My cap isn't the only one I seen that looks bad. When it's on I see a bad alignment problem as mentioned by Centerline looking thru the windshield, that's why I asked to see that angle in my first post. I have also seen others in person that I didn't think looked good. I will admit that I have seen good ones. So my opinion on the caps is good luck. I hope you don't get a bad one, they are out there. Ray, just cause you think you have the bestest Maverick don't mean I don't have the bestest Comet. :16suspect
wouldn't/couldn't the fitment also be determined by how bad the dash is its going over? Mine has minimal cracks........and could the original dash be a little warped or something?
I had put it in my 75 and it has the usual crack down the center, but not as bad as I have seen. No warpage that I can tell and the whole car is in great shape. I do know that when you use a mold that it can become different and should be replaced after a certain amount of use. I may have the one at the end of a batch. I will be trying to see if leaving it in the sun while it's on will help. Been sunny all month and today it's overcast :16suspect.
Cool Gene. I kinda like Seth's idea.......mine "snaps" into place but will come out, (but not off) after driving, I might try the velcro.
I'm gonna revive an old one here, but I just wanted to add something. I bought a cap from JC Whitney in 1997 (made by Accuform) and paid the extra to have it come in blue....since my interior is blue. The blue was lighter than it should have been but it actually matched the dash color better than the original. I removed it today....in 2010 and wanted to say that it never warped and the dye still looked perfect. The only reason I am replacing it is because it had one crack in it. The word of caution I'll give is to follow the instructions and only glue the edges (if at all). I got glue happy with mine and when I removed it...it pulled off some of the factory pad with it. My car has sit outside covered up by a blue tarp in the Tennessee heat since 1997 and the cap held up great in my book. I bought another that was "computer color matched" on ebay, but I actually thought the JC Whitney one looked better being a lighter shade. Just my Here's a pic I posted a few months back in the project area of the cap after 13 years
Looks good. But hey do tell you in hot areas to use window shades also. I have 2 of them that have warped.
No shade, but covered with a cheap tarp in direct sun for 13 years....must have been like an oven. If they were bad about warping I'd have figured mine would be turned inside out...must have been the extra glue that held it in place! lol
Mine is from the late 80's-early 90's, came in my '74 Grabber, and I swapped it over to my '72 back in '06. It's a little warped and has a crack in it, but it looks better then what's underneath.
Well go the cap today. It doesnt just snap in like I had hoped. If I put it on the right it pops off when I put on the left and vice versa. My pad has 15 or so 1/2" wide cracks. I think the pad has expanded. I will probably need to trim off quite a bit to get the cap to fit. Kinda worried about hacking into the dash pad.
Wow! It must be stretched out pretty bad! I have installed several of the caps. They all have just snapped into place. You might be able to take a heat gun (or hair dryer) and heat it up when you put it on and actually stretch the cap a bit. Might just work.
