i was told that my mav is not starting with the new motor due to the compression inside the engine is too great for the starter i have and that i will have to buy a high torque starter.... so i went down to ferderal auto parts and got a 1991 mustang starter which the guy their said would work since noone else carries them around here:bs: still cant get it to start

i turn the key... 1 click from starter and see fan move about half an inch...

positive battery cable and solinoid smoke a little and the battery cable is hot...

:mad:someone please help i can afford to drive my dads truck... its a pos that gets 7 miles to the gallon on a good day:biglaugh:

1991 mustang 302 motor big cam
    77 c4 transmission

Safety first, disconnect the coil wire or battery before doing this.

Can you turn the engine over with a socket on the harmonic balancer bolt?
If not, remove the spark plugs and see if you can turn it over by hand.

I got the impression that motor had stock pistons and heads.. in which case compression is NOT the issue. My motor has almost 10:1 compression and the stock Maverick starter turns it over just fine. Did you turn the motor over by hand when (preferably before) you got it to make sure it wasn't seized ?

I've seen the torque converter get put in wrong (drain plug wasn't in the hole in the flywheel) and it binds everything up so the starter won't turn the motor over. You can't even turn it with a rachet. So, If the motor won't turn with the rachet, you might want to check out the torque conveter.

You have a bad ground cable or a bad starter.Provided the battery you are useing is good.Check ALL your grounds/cables for good clean connections and try adding a ground strap to the chassis from one of the starter bolts.

This time i'm leaning on post #7. He said the cable is smoking hot and so is the soleniod. We're waiting on him to go try and turn it...

It's nothing to do with the compression. A buddy of mine is running 13 to 1 with a stock starter with no problem. I gonna go with the toque converter was installed wrong. The cables are getting hot so it has a good ground

I have also seen the torque converter get put in wrong. Either not getting the drain plug in the hole or not getting the converter back onto the pump far enough thus cracking the tranny pump and locking everything up.
Try turning the engine with a wrench like said above.
Letting the smoke out of the cables sounds like the battery is up to snuff but still might mean cables or grounds could be bad. I still lean with the converter though

That bites...Remove the starter and see if the engine turns.A jammed up starter will cause this as well as a jammed up TQ converter.
