So, I'm 15, new to the site and what not... and was out in January of 2009 looking for a car, something cheap, but also something I could stand to drive in, which rules out things like Geo Metros. I asked my friends what kind of cars they wanted, they all wanted Aston Martins and Ferraris, when I asked them the cars they had a chance of actually getting... obviously different. 80's sedans, Dodge Neons, the Cavalier, 97 Firebird, that type of thing. So I realized I didn't care at all what my peers wanted and went off to find a 50's car, for under $900. I was REALLY HOPING for some idiot to be getting rid of a poor condition 56 Bel Air for cheap but no. Long story short I got really disappointed, thought I'd get a beater Neon, and went to Blockbuster to get a movie like Wayne's World, but in the parking lot was this matte red, dented and rusted 70 Maverick. I knew it wasn't the kind of car most people would stop to see, and more the kind one would write "clean me" on. But I really liked this car. I guess I stared at it for a while, cuz the owner actually got in while I was still staring. I found it was a Maverick, and looked until July to get one. I decided 71 was my favorite year, the later years had too much chrome for me, and the 70 seems a tad rare. Just as I was about to settle for a 77 pinto, I found a Craigslist ad, for a 71 Maverick. $500, sold to me by this biker guy. But it needs a pretty thorough restoration, I just got the battery in today, most of the electrical things work, lights, wipers, horn, etc. But there are limits to the knowhow of 15 year old dude, obviously, for example, where's a cheap place in ohio to buy the Maverick bench seats?
Howdy and A lot of people convert to buckets so bench seats are out there. Problem is finding them close enough to make a trip and get them. Check your local junk yards first and put a "Wanted" post on this board. Good Luck!!
Welcome from Florida....... If your car has the seats just recover them,if there missing serch junk yards for some buckets.. Do a serch here for people that put seats from other cars, a few have done it.... Good Luck with your project.............
Welcome! always glad to see another member close and another 'younger generation' mavericker. im in central Ky and if there's anything i can do to help you out with parts then just lemme know. :Handshake
Welcome to the madness!!! You have arrived at the center of the Maverick/Comet universe.Plenty of knowledge and experience here to help you out.Enjoy!!!
I wanna thank everybody here who welcomed me, and how exactly do you reupholster Maverick seats that have been ripped and rotted since the 80's? I really like the bench seats, but the springs kinda suck and theres a giant patch of duct tape over a rather large rip. I tried to use some Mighty MendIt, then decided just to put a black pillow on it for now.
If i were you i would get a bench with good springs.. People give bench seats away.. And take your seats to an upholstery shop to get them reupholstered in any color or whatever but its expensive cheapest qoute i got was $700 but that was in vinyl.
Thanks... but I'm on the poor side. I'll stick with my MendIt for now, at least until i get my carbuerator and fuel filter. IN OTHER NEWS... Some guy posted a thread here about Junkyards crushing all the Mavericks. I have a related story, all the junkyards around my area only have car parts 2005 and newer. They'd scrap any Mavericks they get without taking the parts out first. I don't get how they really make money selling parts for new cars in a junkyard. Especially when Auto Zone is cheaper.
2005?? must not be very many parts to choose from... as for upholstry on a bench it is actually pretty easy. you dont even have to be able to sew a perfectly straight line, just need a strong sewing machine and some upholstry needles. you can get vinyl through joanns fabrics pretty cheap. i did the front cushions in my boat with more expensive boat vinyl and was surprised how easy it actually is.... welcome aboard!
