having a brain fart when trying to re-assemble the mav. I can't remember where those rectangular metal pieces with the "U" cut into them go when attaching the fender. Having troubles getting the plastic side view mirror back on and my door handle resurrected from a bunch of tiny parts. But the fenders are the big thing. if anyone knows off hand or happens to have a pic laying around that would be great. I'm gonna go stare at it some more. maybe it will come to me - been a few months since I took it apart. maybe I can figure out how the sidemarkers go together while I wait hahaha. Thnx.
Not sure about those fender pieces. Is it a bar for support? Try remembering after it has been 5 years LOL!
How about a picture of what part you are talking about? Is this a large piece or is it smaller almost washer size? In the 70's many dealers would still do a better fit and finish on cars and use U shapped shims to make the fender sit level with a closed hood That's not uncommon and you would just bolt on the fender close the hood and see if the fender needed to be brought up anywhere. That is the ONLY metal piece with a U in it I can possibly think of, but I have a 74 so maybe something small bumper related?
Sounds like the shims that go under the back edge of the fender to align it with the door. There are two bolts under there, and all the cars I've removed fenders from had the shims. They are a couple inches long, about 3/4" wide.
that's exactly what it is! Thanks matt! I'll put'm by the back then I guess under the bolts.... really shoulda taken pics as I took it apart.
Hmm mine were ontop and they aligned the fender to the cowl. One on each side the doors were not the problem they lined up just fine when the cowl lined up. I guess it all depends on the plant and the year..... After reading your answer again Grabber5.0 we might be saying the same thing I just interpeted it wrong.
i tried using them and the fenders were too high, without them it still doesn't line up right. Tried variations of only using one or both and in different combinations of places... The hood I haven't gotten back to being able to line up right again and the trunk won't close anymore lol. Is there a trick to this I just don't know? car just looks silly now.
mine came off the closest bolt to the cowl they didnt look right either till i completely bolted the fender on.
Those shimms are ONLY used if an adjustment is necessary to raise part of the fender. It could be any of the bolts along the top of the fender. You won't know until you get the hood on. You might not need any.
I think I might have better luck raising the hood hinges up to meet the fender and shimming the door hinges. The fenders look right....the other stuff doesn't match up tho.
oh and haha. my car doesn't have any holes to bolt a back bumper in. maybe I'll just glue a 2x4 to it.
