Org. Thread: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=47744 Based on MavMan72's awesome idea, I'm painting the front bumper extension body color (yellow) up to the contour line, then I'm painting the area beneath the grill black. I prepped the area nicely, removing any wax and lightly sanded the surface. Last night I painted the black, and next I'll paint the yellow. However, since this is a vinyl product, here is where I'm nervous: I'm almost afraid that the black paint will pull up when I remove the masking tape along the contour edge (which I can't avoid). I'm going to let the black paint dry for several days, but is there anything else I can do to alleviate this potential problem? Progress pics.. Here are some progress pics. While I've got everything apart, I'm coating the inner bumper support with Chassis Saver, then I'm going to paint the radiator support across the front black (when looking at the car from the front, I always hated seeing the yellow behind the grill). I have not painted the front part of the bumper extension yellow yet, still letting the black part cure and dry really well (before having to tape it off)....
Cool pics of your progress. Know what you mean with the paint . . . sorry I can't help with the ole paint pull-off thing. Good luck and let us know what worked for ya.
Isn't automotive painters masking tape less sticky than even regular painters tape? Definitely don't use regular masking tape, it'll pull it off for sure.
I should think as long as you prepped the surface well. The paint will stick no problem.Either way pull the tape carefully and slowly.Good luck with it!!!
Progress pics.. Rando76: Yes the parts (as well as the rest of the car) do look remarkable, but you've got to remember, this car came from Alabama and it only had 14,000 when I got it. It always amazes me when I"m working on it and bolts just "loosen" up, without any problems or even breaking for that matter, so "not" typical (I even removed the catalytic converter, I totally figured the bolts would break or I'd have to cut them off, but they just backed off without any problems!). Attached are a few progress pics. I ended using electrical tape so I could get the curves to flow properly. Painted the yellow part yesterday and everything came out good. I also painted the front cavity black as well, so tonight after work I'll start putting everything back together...
Final results... Just got the car back together last night and snapped a couple shots. The best part is the "non-yellow" bleed through in the grill area....
