Yup, another one of these threads! I assure you, I am searching the archives. I'm entering the serious phase of getting my c4 swapped out and need some verifications on parts that will take place on my 77' 302 4door. Last I recall, a AOD from a Lincoln Versailles will work? I also see that any aod from 88 to 93 302 will work, even a F-150? The bigger of the questions I have is how the cabling works for the gear shifter, being as this is a steering column shifter. Is there a kit that I would get for this if its a new trans or are there parts on the doner transmission? This step has me a little interested in how it goes. I see that a mav member sells the modified x-members. I would also need to pick some stuff up from Lokar and a new flex plate. Thanks!
welcome aboard! where you located? 71Gold (Frank) is the MAN! for the crossmembers. if you are wanting to keep the column shifter i believe you will need to mod the shift arm on the trans to work with the linkage but someone else will most likely have a more precise answer.... Good Luck!
bump bump I've come across some kits that help the conversion process to a AOD for the early Mustangs, like the linkage. Would some of the parts on these work for the conversion in the Maverick? Thanks
do the mustang kits you are looking at work for a column shifter? if not then they are most likely for floor shift. factory style tv cable is supposedly much better than the Lokar one so you may want to do a search on setting that part up...
I think a few people have gotten them to work, they work really well if you want EFI. The factory ones on carbs/TBI's are mechanical linkage(all the ones I found are) and all the cables I have found are only for fuel injection and sad to say wont work with a carb. If you can get one to work great but if I would have just ordered a Lokar in the first place it would have saved me a couple trips to the junkyard and a whole lot of wasted time before I finally gave up and ordered it. From what I had found in the forums before I broke down and bought mine was everyone followed the same pattern, they all tried to get it to work and then they just finally broke down and bought the Lokar and made it easy
If you find a car [or truck] with the throttle body style injection, they use a rod, like a kickdown rod, instead of the cable. It pushes, instead of pulling, so the trans linkage has to be reverse [180 degrees ] of the cable style.
It does not work with a 4v carb I tried that and if you look at Franks (71gold) original post he tried the same thing. yes it is long enough but it has a different mounting and the ratio is different, when you buy lokar you have to buy a ratio adapter to change the position of the transmission tv cable. I am not saying they can not be modified to work, there are people that have done it. I am just saying the time involved with adjusting it in can be more than it is worth. You can make all the bracketry and sit and work on adjusting it in so it shifts correctly, or you can just buy the lokar cable buy the ratio adapter and bolt it on.
look for a late 80s ltd. they had carbed aods. they will have all the correct linkage for the kick down.
Stex97 I have a column shift AOD in my mav. You can make the linkage if your handy and have a welder 1 Go to the junk yard and find a column shift aod ford car remove ALL the shift linkage from the column to the trans. ( all I mean everything the cross shaft the frame mount all linkage rods etc. ) 2 You have all your c4 linkage . 3 you will need a peace of 7/16 round stock 12'' all be good. 4 On both cross shafts you will cut them a part and save all the levers. 5 Save the levers on the column side of the c4 and the trans side for the AOD ( you will need them later ) 6 On both levers weld on 7/16 colars stops ( the stops are used as bearing stops on a shafts a good hardware store should have them A colar stop is a sleve with a allen set screw through the side so you can tigften on the shaft ) 7 Bolt the cross shaft piviot to trans side, cut the cross to lenght, than bolt in the frame side cross shaft piviot . make cross shaft level to the floor with car level 8 Install both levers on cross aod side to trans c4 side to column 9 With both the trans and column in neutral install the trans side aod shift rod and tighten allen screw 10 You will need to bend the shift rod from the column to the cross shaft to align with the c4 lever on cross shaft 11 After all lined up thigten the set screws and cycle shifter make sure all gears are working 12 Then weld colars to shaft . This seams like of work but it works Jay
